Well let me add a update on cord cutting. 18 Months ago I bought a TCL-ROKU TV, 55 inch. Not a bad TV and it had ROKU built in
.About two weeks ago I noticed that to the left of the screen there was a swath from the top to the bottom about 6 inches wide that had darkened a little more but they than the rest of the picture. Long story short I had a extended warranty, but they wanted to try and fix it rather than replace it.
So the local place told me that I would have no TV for at least a week or more. I then decided I would get a new TV,I got a VIZIO 65” Smartcast and while I was at it finally cut the cord with Direct TV, my contract was finally up.
Now I got the new TV mounted and up and running. It had Google’s Chromecast built it, but i found it was not as good as ROKU. Second I did not realize that some of these new TV’s do not have a tuner in them for Antenna reception, and I have a digital antenna I was going to use. So no way to hook that up.
So what I ended up doing was going to Walmart and getting a Digital Tuner that I got hooked up and it worked great and I now pick a lot of good local channels including the ION channel which I really like and of course ME TV.
Next I went on and got a ROKU Streaming stick and hooked that up to have ROKU again, much superior to Chromecast in the APPS you can get.
Now I thought about using Sling TV, YouTube or HULU Live TV. Well I found out that HULU LIVE TV is only available for the computer, tablet, or your smart phone. It is not available for the apps on ROKU, etc. So that was out. After looking at what I can get and all the available content on ROKU I have decided not to do anything else. I really don’t need it. I have all the local channels and more over my Digital Antenna, and the digital tuner I got can also be set up to record local channels very easily and I got that at Walmart for $40 bucks.
So bottom line I got rid of Direct TV and will save about $156 a month. HULU and NetFlix together are $19.99 a month and I feel that is enough. ROKU offers most of the channels I got on Satellite that I like to watch and they are free like USA Network, Syfy, The CW,Fox News, Fox Business, etc. and etc. So if I amortize everything out for the next year I have paid for the new TV ,a year’s worth of HULU and Netflix and still will come out ahead about $552. A good deal in my opinion.
So the bottom line is that you get rid of cable and satellite and come out ahead.
Hope my experience will help anyone out there who wants to cut the cord.
Actually you can get TCM on Youtube for nothing.
