FWIW, I have deliberately used that when I do not wish to reveal the gender of a person about whom I am talking. So sometimes I say *A friend* or *a relative* and then use *they, them, or their*.
I don’t have any clue who FReepers are in real life and whether or not I know any or a am related to any and I do not wish to give out enough personal information that could identify either the other person or me.
So sometimes it can be deliberate.
