His involvement with the Keating Five should’ve been enough to show him the door back then. It’s too bad Goldwater didn’t retire as he should’ve in 1980, we’d have had a different Republican in the seat. The only downside is that McQueeg may have simply chosen to wait to run for Senator until 1992 or 1994. A combo of another GOP Senator elected in 1980 and John Rhodes not retiring in 1982 could’ve stopped McQueeg cold.
