“Hack” wouldn’t be the appropriate word to use.
All of the data was sitting there in the massive NSA database. For anyone to have used it within the US group....you would require a court order or warrant. Because of the ‘friendship’ of the UK and various deals with Brit intelligence, they have free access to the database, without a court order.
My guess is that NSA had some kind of filter and knows when the Brits come in to browse through the data, and they know what they were looking at.
The problem really becomes...do you want to dump this relationship with Brit intelligence by laying out the cards? Did PM May even know about the request by the Obama White House? And what else did the WH request besides Trump’s data?

It’s an open secret that our “allies” are used as cutouts for illegal surveillance of American citizens. It is completely reciprocated on our part. The NSA regularly spies on law-abiding Brits at the behest of her Majesty’s government. It’s just a shame that the bastards have to go to such lengths to usurp our Constitution and the Laws of other sovereign nations. Privacy such an anachronism. If you’ve got nothing to hide, what do you care, right?
In case folks haven't figured it out yet, the governments of the world have an undeclared war against their citizens.
They share intelligence, resources, and personnel.
Ignore the lines on the map and pay attention!
