“My son’s degree was in the engineering department of a major university.”

That’s rough, I would think an engineering degree would be a winner. But adaptability is a good trait (and I’m sure the degree still looks good on a resume).

“Meh. To me it only proves a person is capable of warming a chair and chugging beer. A trade school is a much better choice”

It really depends on what you are studying. I went to Georgia Tech for engineering. The foundation learned there couldn’t be replaced by a trade school. It took time to build up to the more complex concepts and classes. We certainly had beer, but there was a lot more than warming a chair involved in the education.

So my perspective come from that side of the world.

Liberal arts and biz school? No idea what they learned and at what pace.

You have a hard time administering those to prospective employees, however.

Isn't this proof that federal financial aid is what is driving the skyrocketing tuition costs that everybody is complaining about? Look what happens to a college when financial aid options are removed. You are left with a college that is unable to compete with others that receive it.

Imagine if the financial aid was dramatically scaled back across the board. Imagine if every college and university had to contend with this. What would then happen to tuition costs across the board? Institutions would be forced to compete for students, thereby driving costs down.

I have sat in corporate diversity training where they said all whites are racists, all men are sexist, all heterosexuals are -ist. And if you disagree with the official narrative, it is a violation of the company’s respect and tolerance policy.
Many businesses have implemented this as a requirement of getting federal contracts or implemented it to get preference as a supplier to companies that do it for federal contract preferences, while a few do it in the hope that the social engineering of the workforce is a good virtue signal and results in more business.
The sheer size and number of federal contracts have made this insanity NORMAL in the business and non-profit world, and the desire to get the carrot (money) keeps many disagreeing parties silent.

Damn dude! I don’t doubt you... but my experience has been different. I was until recently a Federal Contractor and I never got exposed to anything like that. I have to tell ya, I wouldn’t have sat quietly through that sort of bullshit.

I put it like this: “If you go to college and complete four years, you have proven you can take a bunch of crap.... and PAY FOR IT. And if you can, you will fit RIGHT IN, here. “

I worked for a defense contractor through last year. If I hadn’t been a woman with security clearance, they’d have fired me as soon as I tried to push sexual harassment charges on the trangender (mentally ill man in a dress) who thought it was OK to criticize my hair, clothing, attitudes in order to lift himself up.
When their standard moderately bad diversity training turned into EVERY meeting for at least a few minutes, and for the sake of LBGTA acceptance, pushed a number of women to talk about husbands “coming out” and cheating on them or leaving them ... and the definition of respect by HR was “endorse or shut up”.
Thus recommendation to one woman with 4 kids under 10 was “if you don’t want to tolerate adultery, do you want a good divorce attorney?” when others suggested a support group for straight spouses of gay men was considered homophobic, then reduced since gender neutral to unacceptably judgemental, more diversity training.
Several women were pushed to talk about how their husbands left them, and I brought up how people talking about dissolution of marriages for infidelity or cheating with men is sexual harassment for the rest of us. I was told by HR “it cannot be sexual harassment, because it respects the opinions of the minority”.
One guy asked for advice on an underaged son who came out as homosexual and now wanted to be a girl (because boys weren’t attracted to him), so I sent him Dr. Paul McHugh’s article. Someone reported that, another reprimand.
HR asked me why I kept getting into these situations. I brought up that it was essentially weekly between team meetings, department meetings, quarterly meetings, annual training, and I wasn’t interrupting all those events. I was being punished for giving advice that was normal 20 years ago. I was told 20 years ago was backward and not acceptable, it was actually hateful. I was told my views were unacceptable. I brought up that my views were in line with several major Christian denominations, and every case they had was my response to someone ELSE asking a question. I was told that I could answer, but only respectfully. “Your definition of respect is only left wing political answers, and that’s religious discrimination.”
When challenged to prove I’m not just saying that to get out of trouble, my manager was able to vouch, yes, I paid more in private religious school tuition for my children than my mortgage - but had never proselytized at work.
They didn’t fire me, but I started job hunting because all the demerits in a year meant no raise, no performance sharing payment, and they started demanding more weekends and evening shifts. And I have children.
When I told my boss I’d found a new job, he wasn’t surprised. He was surprised that it was a pay cut. I said that’s the price I pay to work with sane people.
