For you freepers across the water, you may not be aware that murders and woundings involving rifles, handguns etc, have actually increased since the outright ban in 1997.
The criminal element do not seem to bother with licences or permits, and don’t seem to have much difficulty in acquiring automatic weapons.
My late F-I-L came from a family that had to "make it do, wear it out, use it up or go without," and some of his elderly relatives would extend the lives of decrepit single-shot shotguns by sawing off the barrel behind a muzzle that had become damaged or a barrel that had bulged. Sometimes it would be an inch or so, and a few of them got trimmed back more than once, but in any event, they ended up with some barrels that weren't so well balanced and which patterned like a donut but none were so short to be illegal or so short/light to make them too hard-kicking.
I suspect that they all basically fell apart much like the one hoss shay: by the time the barrel needed to be whacked down below 20" or so, they weren't safe to use at all and got thrown into a ravine along with the other possessions that were no longer worth fooling with.

Moreover, a halfway competent machinist apprentice could make something similar from raw bar stock and a good mill. A STEN gun can be machined in a weekend from scratch with a basic high school metal shop. Or a garage with a mill and lathe.
I remember them coming from Western Auto and for a lot less than $49.99 plus there were no sales taxes back then, the price was as marked.
Pity she wasn't considered trustworthy enough to carry a weapon with which she might have defended her own life and that of others. Drug user or a criminal record, I suppose.
Thanks, I learn something new around here every day.
I have somewhere an old article from TRUE Magazine from 1966 about criminals always managing to get firearms. GUNS OF DESPERATION.
The photo shown was a sawed off bolt action .22 rifle.
After the Clinton AW ban, a raid on a drug house in Chicago netted a large number of sawed off single shot shotguns. No A-s-s-sault rifles!
She was a lefty. Probably thought guns were icky or since she was a Brit appalling.
Just shocking...

He knows. That's why he substituted the photo from Australia.
Oh the inanity!
Actually the theme here is that the availability of legal firearms means that they can be easily made into bad weapons
