First use a search engine like google to look for names you want. If you search at a registrar beware as some registrars will instantly buy the name then say it is available to you at a higher price.
I use Godaddy as they have low prices and I use Lunarpages to host the site as their price for that is lower the GoDaddy. Lunarpages http://www.lunarpages.com
The FTP program I use to upload the files is a free one called FireFTP. It is an add on for Firefox. You can open it as a separate window. https://addons.mozilla.org/en-us/firefox/addon/fireftp
If you need help in webpage design or graphics you can go to Fiverr https://www.fiverr.com

Hi!
We own 16 domains, ourselves. We have been with BlueHost.com for 5 years.
Best Regards,
David
I really like godaddy for domain registration, but for nothing else; their email hosting is particularly awful.
However, their control panels for managing your domains are excellent as is their telephone consulting should the need arise. They’ve been really helpful to me at times.
The main thing is wade through all of their upselling web pages after you select your domains(s) and head towards making actual payment. Don’t buy ANY of their services, just the domain itself.
Whatever you do, don’t use networksolutions, and in particular, don’t check on domain name existence with networksolutions or they’ll front run you and grab the domain themselves and then try to resell it to you for really big bucks.
name.com ain’t too bad.
Great thread.
Bluehost has an irritable insistence on automatically billing your account without your permission. I had a website through them but canceled it recently but I was still charged for it and various support services.
Bluehost grudgingly admitted that I had canceled the site after some back and forth, but stated that they were unable to reverse the charges for the support services since the payments had already been processed.
Even though the website no longer exists!!!
Still looking for a better provider.
Hmmm. Perhaps “irritating” is a better word than “irritable” in this instance.
Although they (Bluehost) are that, no doubt.
