Interesting... Could be I suppose, I did a search on yahoo tonight instead of google and their top answers we the coal miners. But when I clicked on the top link to read more about it,

The origins of the term redneck actually go back to the 1930's in a number of disputes in West Virginia.....

Then goes on to say

Originally, the term came from the later 1800's in southern Georgia and Alabama to refer to sharecroppers who worked in the fields thus getting a sunburned neck. They were called 'rednecks' as a term meant for hard working people. Today, the term is used by comedians and commentators to refer to people who are uneducated, close-minded and racist individuals.

really not trying to argue the point, only reason I mention it is because I grew up with my grandfather and entire extended family as self professed rednecks with the latter definition. My grandfather, born in 1912 to a family of sharecroppers in Arkansas was one of 10 kids... Back then, they had all the kids to help work the farm. He went farthest in school of all the boys and had to quit in 6th grade because he could not keep up with both his school work and farm chores.
For somebody that only had a 6th grade education, he was smarter than most college graduates are today. He could fix absolutely anything and could also build pretty much anything he wanted. I still have a metal violin he made when he was 12 years old using a cold chisel and an old model t door. I also still have his 1932 John Deere tractor that he used every year all the way up until the year before he died in '08. He was messing around in the '50s with salt water an copper coils to pull the hydrogen out to use as a fuel for automobiles... gave it up after the bucket foamed up and he tried to ignite just a little bit of it, when he felt he was lucky to still have all his hand and fingers. The farm house they lived in the last 50 years of their lives was built in 1900
Anyway I have always associated with the term and wore it as a badge of honor... Dont really give a damn what anybody else thinks of me and my antiquated ways. I don't waste too much, cant afford too. Not much gets thrown away or replaced until I have fixed it a few times first. Then I used to always save it to see if I can use it for something else. Finally gotten past that for the most part, except the really good junk... I am rebuilding my '77 Chevy truck and swapping to a dodge diesel cummins motor currently and my "escape plan" involves my old RV, a '76 GMC. Both my boys have REDNECK4LIFE stickers across their 4x4 windshields...

Dear AzNASCARfan,
After absorbing a bit of your heritage and family ties, I have decided to abandon my #1 definition of “ Redneck “ and adopt yours, as it seems to fit me and mine a lot better. Your grand-dad reminds me of mine and I’m sure that your & my backgrounds are quite similar. I thank you for taking me to task on this. Good luck with the Chevy & GMC. Please tell your boys that a FReeper FRiend says hi ya’ll and keep that redneck pride showin’- I WILL !

Hey Snoot,
I will pass that along, I thank you for getting me thinking about my younger days and also making me look it up.... really was not trying to change minds, just giving my perspective. I did not grow up in the south, my grandparents left Arkansas and moved west right after they got married, during the depression to find work.

Really it always just meant country folk to me over city folk in my younger days... after my step-mom called our county fair redneck when I was about 12 years old. I grew up in a little rural town about 30 miles downriver from Portland and she was from the big city of Portland.

I also enjoyed learning about the Virginia coal miners, nice to know they were the good guys too and that the only negative definition of the word originated with the all inclusive liberals... who believe everybody deserves equal rights/freedoms/treatment except the Christians. They have managed to twist the written words of the constitution from “Freedom of religion” to “Freedom from religion”. They have also destroyed the word Racist/Racism in my adult lifetime too. It has been so misused recently that it means almost nothing to me now when I hear it used.
