When they can pass that turn-of-the-century 8th grade exam that’s made the rounds over the years, THEN I’ll agree they have enough homework. Problem is, not one of their teachers could pass that test either.
Sad.
You are right. Most of the time it is just busy work that ends up taking time away from real studying. I am against homework. Families deserve their own time once the school day and work day are finished.
I’m the product of the NYC public school system when it was actually pretty good. From what I remember, the only homework I had until 4th grade was producing a couple of book reports a year. And it was done in such a way that you needed math to get the cover right. (measuring letters and spaces between them)
When I hit 7th grade, it was 30-40 minutes a night, per class. High school was about the same. I went to school from 10-4:30, had practice till 6, ate and did homework from 7-10.
When my kids got to high school, I asked them where their textbooks were. My son pointed to his phone.
I don’t get it.
And in other countries they have more homework. That’s why an American college degree is worth an European high school diploma.
No fair copying and pasting.
Shhhh! The teacher was going to take care of that...
When I was in school, the problem was that every teacher thought that she was the only teacher giving homework.
My experience was that my and my siblings’ homework destroyed any family life. It ate up four or five hours every night. And most of it was stupid, pointless, busywork that taught nothing.
SCHOOL is the basic problem. It is a hoax.
Your post reminds me of my teleproduction course. There was a scriptwriting sector that me and one other guy did well at. The instructor was a bit dodgy to say the least and we wondered more than once if any of our stuff had been ripped off. Not surprised if it happened.
You sound like a great TEACHER. If they are not learning anything in class the homework assignments won't help.
Homework should only reinforce what was learned in class. It should not be use by lazy teachers who can't teach.
I always viewed homework as unpaid overtime.
It sucked. College wasn't even that demanding.
Homework is important, but there has to be reasonable limits. Just like everything else in life.
Is that what the kids are calling it these days?
I think that happens in graduate school quite a bit (no pay for journal articles; in fact there are often page charges but it’s the prestige that comes with it.)
