I’m surprised his picture isn’t on the freakin dinner plate.
Of all the things the Obama’s have done, I don’t see the objective of so much outrage over a set of WH dishes paid for with private funds. The description offered in the article doesn’t sound too garish. We have so many things by which to be offended. I’m saving my ire for greater things.
Okay. Let him have his china.
Yes, I remember the left getting all wee-wee'd up over that. But that was when we were at war with Eastasia...or was it Eurasia?
AS much as I dislike the socialist, all administrations do this and it’s paid for with private funds.
Is it a triviality when more important things are going on? Absolutely!! But even as despicable as this president is, I will charitably give him the benefit of the doubt as to whether he can walk and chew gum at the same time and say yea or nay to a china pattern between more important business. Besides, it looks to be delegated to Moochelle anyway — known for her dazzling sense of style (that’s sarcasm in case you missed it).
I rate this a big ho-hum...
Memories! :)
Odd color. It doesn't look very formal to me.
The shape of the coffee cup a soup cup are modern and informal. The charger with the crest is nice. Pickard is known for their use of heavy gilt. I agree the turquoise is odd but actually I like it better than the Clintons. As long as it was paid for with private donations and not with government funds, I am really not too concerned. It will only get used for the next 19 months then will be retired.
This individual soup tureen is unusual, but is it practical? At state dinners does each table have its own private server, or two? If not, where are the diners going to put the lids when then eat the soup?
If they rest the lids on the table cloth (if there is space for something extra) it's going to leave a steam/condensation circle spoiling the linen. Michelle's "intimation" (from the text at the website) that the family might use those bowls for "ice cream" at Thanksgiving is mind boggling. Does the 1st family normally use the state dinner service for their own personal occasions? And, what about the portion size?
“Times have changed. Namcy Reagan was raked over the coals for spending $200,000 in privately-donated funds for new White House china service.”
I have heard, but can’t corroberate, that Mrs. Reagan only did this by request of the White House Butler (or caterer, or appropriate position.) Evidently, she asked that person if there was anything that he needed to better execute his job responsibilities.
He requested new china, to be used at state dinners. Evidently, the china in use at the time was mismatched and in great need of replacement. Mrs. Reagan agreed and started raising private funds, as you pointed out. Eventually, they privately funded a new set of china for use at state dinners.
Yes, the result was an all out attack by the media. Yet, Mrs. Reagan never mentioned the original request. The gentleman that originally made the request begged her to let the media know that he had made the request. She refused, telling him that it was her job to take the heat for managing the White House and that he should not have to face such attacks.
She was a wonderful, classy First Lady....
My parents are hopeless blind liberals. They have Obama plates in their house. I don’t talk to them much.
Given the mind set in DC...the diners will be using the lids as Frizbes throughout the meal. That’s what children do...even in restaurants and state dinners. The bowl itself will be worn on the head.
I am not sure what they will do with the covers for the soup cups at table. I have my grandmother’s Haviland from the 1930s and her soup cups do not have covers.
As for the Obama’s using them for ice cream at Thanksgiving, who’s going to tell Michelle she can’t? :/
What is the point? The covers are to keep the soup warm until everyone is served. Is it so hot in the WH that the ice cream might melt? And, would a covered dish even matter?
My Haviland soup cups don't have covers either. Neither do my Spode, nor my Shelley. ;^)
