Are you in a mountainous part of Western PA BTW?

I am going to jump in here. I am, about 27 miles east, southeast of Pittsburgh. I finished cleaning the stoves, hauling in firewood, prepping the snowblower, putting studs on the cars and putting up drift markers.

I know it (cold, little bit of snow) is suppose to head our way sometime, but we have only had a light dusting (light dusting here means death in most of the south). Sitting at 29º now on the ridge.

Somehow, everything has been mild up to today. Normally we always get hit with cold and heavy snow.

I think this is going to be a repeat of the winter of 86-87.

-31 at my place last night.

Ouch. It is 85 or better here, 365 days a year. You know where I am, so I don't need to tell you.

:-)

It was 17 degrees in Boise this morning, and it snowed all day today. They say it will snow tomorrow as well. The leaves are not even down yet...

Ski better at Bogus Basin. I am sure they love it up there. That is where I learned to ski.

Except that Bogus Basin won’t be open yet... Too early.

In eastern Kansas it’s 22 now and the dew point is 9, so it’s a very cold night. Saturday up to five inches of global warming are forecast, with locally heavier amounts of Al Gore’s patented lumpy white rain.

If it keeps snowing like that, they open it soon. I grew up playing ice hockey, but I took up skiing at Bogus Basin, when I was at Mt. Home. As much as I loved playing hockey, I think I enjoyed skiing even more. I thought there was only one thing more fun than skiing, but I will leave that up to your imagination.

Currently 25 degrees in southern TN. They said our low overnight would be around 23 but I have a sinking feeling it’ll drop into the teens before morning.
It was 32 and snowing a little this afternoon. Normal high temp for this time of year is in the low 60s.
This is NOT fun!

"Which part of the Greater North Pole do you live in?"

The three of us are in CO. 9,200 feet at my place, just on the east side of some 14-ers on the Divide. Yesterday's cold wind came across the high plains before it got to me, though. Very unusually cold down there.

Tonight is toasty, so far (23 F), because it's snowing again (from the south right here). Temps and weather vary all over the Range. December through March at my place, temps will often go into the -30s and winds often around 60-80 mph, driving ice across this wide, treeless area. Over 100 mph at least one night per winter.

TigersEye and laplata have probably been through here sometime. Looks kinda like Mars.

“I thought there was only one thing more fun than skiing, but I will leave that up to your imagination. “

Everybody says that... Golf right?

Seriously, my kids grew up with season passes and still ski but I decided a decade ago that strapping 6 foot leavers to my feet and falling down a mountain wasn’t too bright.

I think the opening date has to do with their insurance contract, more so than the snow...

Yeah, it’s FRICKING COLD in the Denver metro area right now. We’ve a string of record-breaking lows that’s lasted for several days in a row now.

I for one am getting sick of all this record-breaking cold being caused by global warming, and have finally decided to join with those who want to end global warming if for no other reason than that global warming has made things so damn cold here!

Sorry, on a previous thread I did say where. North central CO, east slope of the Rockies, 7,600 ft. I knew that familyop knew that so I didn't repeat it.

You're really up in the jetstream at 9,200, familyop. I'm surprised it wasn't colder still. The mountains are quirky though. The creases and folds create micro-climates that make conditions better or worse than the overall situation.

Why yes, of course. Golf it is. Sky divers say about the same thing I think, but if you don't want to strap things on your feet and fall off a mountain, I don't want to strap something on my back, and jump out of an airplane that is not in danger of crashing. I really liked Boise, but I retired from the USAF in California, so I just stayed there. After 30 years in the belly of the beast, I had to leave. More of a cost of living thing for me, than anything else.

I’ve been through your area more times than I can count.

My great grandparents settled in Salida in 1858.

That can be a scary area in winter.

Sounds like you’re prepared and comfortable.

If we didn’t have Globull Warming, we’d really be cold.

Where is it dropping into the 50s? Arizona for that to be significant? (Low of 32 at 5 AM where I am at the moment in Pensacola, FLORIDA)

Only at night, in L.A. We have had such a warm fall. It will be in the low 70s for the next five days too. Slipping below 60 at night.

Still in the low 40s here, but we’re ten blocks from the Atlantic and water temps are in the high 50s.

"North central CO, east slope of the Rockies, 7,600 ft."

My guess is that the recent weather pattern came somewhat from the northeast before hitting us, so it made your place colder.

"You're really up in the jetstream at 9,200, familyop. I'm surprised it wasn't colder still."

I'm guessing that I'll be more on the receiving end after storms that come more from the northwest here. No trees between the peaks just to the west and here.

"The mountains are quirky though. The creases and folds create micro-climates that make conditions better or worse than the overall situation."

That's for sure. During most cold times in winter, warmer temperatures are only about two or three miles away.

I'll try to get a little weather station up here, when time allows and am building a few other things first. The temp sensor will need to be properly housed. Most temp sensors around here are not properly housed. They have what amount to collectors around them and/or get heat from the buildings that they are mounted on. A temperature sensor should be mounted with shielding from the sun but no heat from the housing (reflective housing). The amemoneter

A thermistor might be better than a thermometer. Thermometers with coils and thermometers with fluid each have their problems. The anemometer will also need to be carefully chosen and mounted.
