In truth, though, a lot of Viking fans got good and sick of Kluwe. Ownership wouldn’t do anything because they were trying to extort a billion dollars from taxpayers for their new palace (which they got) and didn’t want to risk alienating either one half or the other half of their fanbase.
Kluwe was not an effective punter and he made too much money. So his release was a salary dump, which is not at all uncommon in the NFL. It did give him a chance to play the victim, though, so he is like the planter’s wart on a foot that won’t go away.
