And your bathroom would be under the kitchen sink (a bucket and a sponge).

I don’t like a big house. This is too small for me but I could definitely see the possibilities of a house made out of a shipping container.

Sarah Susaka led the way with her book "The Not So Big House" in 1991. She argued that you'll be much better off putting your money into good and interesting design with high quality materials and construction rather than a crappy McMansion. She's expanded her book concept into a whole franchise now. Check out http://www.notsobighouse.com/.

It’s one acre of land.

“I’m thinking of moving down to about 2,000 ft but I want one with at least a 4 car garage, preferable 5 or larger!”

I would recommend halving the size of the house and doubling the garage. Keep some fold up cots in the garage for the times when relatives visit which won’t be near as often.

Interesting.
Reading the comments, I see that most are focusing on the size of the house. To me, the important thing is, it is situated on an acre (a few sq ft shy) of land. ITSHTF, two adults could survive there easy until they could add on. More land would be preferable, but I could be interested.

“Our maid’s quarters are bigger than that”

Our bathrooms are almost as big as those chicken coups they are promoting!

Dangerous, high capacity houses must be banned. Anyone — excepting important government employees and trade union bosses — who live in houses larger than 128 SF are ENDANGERING THE PEOPLE, and must be EXPROPRIATED. Now I believe in the right to have a home. Under my plan, no one will lose their home. We merely “ask” that everyone contribute their fair share by sharing their homes with other American — and international — families. Experts — including former VP Gore, tell us that at 128 SF per family, we can meet the norms of impoverished third world nations, quickly and efficiently. We can get it done!

Ah, small house!
Mine is over 2000sf, way too big for me, so I often dream of downsizing.
But if you’re going that small, and you have over $20k to invest, get an RV and see the country.
Where I live, a 1000sf home doesn’t cost more than $10k; yep, a yard, a garage, and a 3-br, single family dwelling. At a sheriff’s sale it’d be around $1k!
Twenty grand for a dollhouse is just insane.

I have a closet bigger than that, and a pantry over 100sf. Wouldn’t want to live in either one if the view never changes.

RV’s the way to go and I do mean GO!

I've admired these since I was a kid, would love to have one that has been refurbished and mechanically updated. Quite a few still on the road, parts and service not hard to find, active owners clubs and such. There are even companies specializing in “re-manufactured” pretty much as-new with anti-lock brakes, etc. starting less than $50k, good used ones can be found in the teens and less on odd occasion at estate sales.

They're one of the few purpose-built, engineered and designed motorhomes that have ever existed, and GM did a fine job of it, still imitated to some extent today.

I would love your old farm house I have always wanted one. I have early memories of my mothers family in east Texas and the farm houses they lived in.

Our house is about 60 years old and in great shape but I am always attracted to antique furnishings that have patina, show wear and age. Rustic is what you would call most of our furniture.

I just moved from a midwest house to a Phoenix house.

The thing that made a lot of impact was no third car garage, no basement, no attic and smaller closets.

The house is very nice, in fact beautiful. I went from 2700 SF to 2250 SF but it took me two months to get one bay of the garage empty.

I am using the second adn third bedrooms as giant storage closets, LOL.

My wife needs eight sets of china. We both need a lot of hobby supplies and equipment. What do you do when yoou pare 2000 books down to 1200?

Bikes, camping gear, lawn mowers, 120 Santas?
