I have the feeling that the sign had been marked by a few neighborhood K-9's and the deer was being territorial.
Either that or it's just one really smart deer.

I recommend the homeowners place a picture of Granny “Fauxcahontas” Warren next to the sign. Studies have shown that this will repel all sensate creatures, even those of limited intelligence (except Massachusetts democrats, whose lack of intelligence is unmatched).

The varmint's vandalism began about 10 days ago and it’s unclear what the animal has against the sign.
The deer is SMARTER then the ZERO-Supporting 'HUMAN'.
