It seems there are a lot of people visiting FR who hate Christians and Conservatives. Don’t you think you all would be more at home at Democratic Underground or Huffington Post?

t does not matter when a study is done if they used the proper research criteria. The percentage of women who got pregnant from being raped in 1980 won’t change in 2012. Your odds are the same. One of the three studies was done by the New England Journal of medicine which is one of tne of the top three medical research facitilies in the world.

Maybe you’ll like this study showing how it’s harder to get pregnant when your stressed; it’s done by liberals.

Stress Puts Double Whammy On Reproductive System, Fertility
ScienceDaily (June 29, 2009) — University of California, Berkeley, researchers have found what they think is a critical and, until now, missing piece of the puzzle about how stress causes sexual dysfunction and infertility.

Scientists know that stress boosts levels of stress hormones - glucocorticoids such as cortisol - that inhibit the body’s main sex hormone, gonadotropin releasing hormone (GnRH), and subsequently suppresses sperm count, ovulation and sexual activity.
The new research shows that stress also increases brain levels of a reproductive hormone named gonadotropin-inhibitory hormone, or GnIH, discovered nine years ago in birds and known to be present in humans and other mammals. This small protein hormone, a so-called RFamide-related peptide (RFRP), puts the brakes on reproduction by directly inhibiting GnRH.
The common thread appears to be the glucocorticoid stress hormones, which not only suppress GnRH but boost the suppressor GnIH - a double whammy for the reproductive system.
“We know stress affects the top-tier reproductive hormone, GnRH, but we show, in fact, that stress also affects another high-level hormone, GnIH, to cause reproductive dysfunction,” said lead author Elizabeth Kirby, a graduate student at UC Berkeley’s Helen Wills Neuroscience Institute. “This work provides a new target for researchers, a new way to think about infertility and dysfunction. The more we know, the more we can look for ways to treat it.”
The results will be published the week of June 15 in the Online Early Edition of the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS)
The conclusions are based on experiments in rats and inferences from the effects of the hormone in birds. But if this new reproductive hormone acts the same way in all mammals, researchers say the finding could not only change the way physicians look at human reproductive problems, but also affect how breeders approach animal husbandry and captive breeding programs for endangered species.
“There is a growing body of work that points to GnIH as being a big player in the inhibition of reproduction in mammals,” said co-author George Bentley, UC Berkeley assistant professor of integrative biology. “We didn’t have any hint of this stress effect nine years ago, when GnIH was first discovered.”
In humans, chronic stress can lead to a drop in sex drive as well as a drop in fertility. Even the stress of infertility treatments can block their effectiveness, as evidenced by many anecdotes about couples conceiving children after the failure of assisted reproduction.
Animal breeding also is affected by stress. Zoos, in particular, have difficulty getting some animals to reproduce in captivity, Bentley said.
Based on animal experiments, researchers attribute much of this stress effect on sexual function to an increase in glucocorticoids - stress hormones - produced by the adrenal gland. In the brain, these glucocorticoids suppress the main reproductive hormone, GnRH, which in turn causes a shut-down of the release of the gonadotropins luteinizing hormone and follicle-stimulating hormone by the pituitary, and then a suppression of testosterone, estradiol and sexual behavior.
In 2000, however, a new reproductive hormone was discovered in birds and dubbed gonadotropin-inhibitory hormone (GnIH) because it had the opposite effect of GnRH - it inhibited release of gonadotropins, thereby suppressing reproduction.
“It’s very adaptive to not be wasting resources on reproduction during times of acute stress, to just shut down reproduction for 24 hours or so until the stress is gone,” said co-author Daniela Kaufer, a UC Berkeley assistant professor of integrative biology who looks at how stress affects molecular processes in the brain. “These functions go back in evolution a long way.”
Because of the negative effects of GnIH on reproduction, Bentley, who helped establish the critical role played by GnIH in birds, teamed up with Kaufer and Kirby to explore whether stress might affect GnIH levels in the brain. The homologous hormones in mammals have been dubbed RFamide-related peptides, or RFRPs.
Kirby showed that acutely stressed rats showed increased RFRP levels for several hours, but that levels returned to normal by the next day. Chronically stressed rats, however, were left with longer-term elevations of RFRP levels in the dorsomedial hypothalamus area of the brain, and suppression of activity in the reproductive axis - the hypothalamus-pituitary-gonadal hormone cascade - that is associated with lowered sexual activity.
“With chronic stress, glucocorticoids went sky high,” Kirby said.
To determine the role of glucocorticoids, Kirby removed the adrenal glands of male rats, eliminating the source of the hormone. Without adrenals, stress no longer affected RFRP levels in the brain. The researchers also showed that the cells that produce RFRP have receptors for glucocorticoids, a clear indication that these stress hormones can directly affect the cells that produce RFRP.
“Critically, we show that RFRP neurons express the receptors for glucocorticoids, which are released from the adrenal glands in response to stress, and that removal of the adrenal glands prevents the stress-induced, up-regulation of RFRP,” Bentley said. “Thus, we believe we have identified an entirely novel pathway for stress-induced reproductive dysfunction.”
Kirby noted that adrenal hormones are critical to survival, so removing the gland and thus glucocorticoids is not a solution to chronic stress.
However, Kaufer said, it may be possible to block GnIH to reduce some of the effects of stress on reproduction.
The researchers plan to confirm the results in female rats and investigate further the role of GnIH in reproduction.
The work was supported by the National Science Foundation. Other coauthors of the PNAS paper are graduate students Anna C. Geraghty and Takayoshi Ubuka of UC Berkeley’s Department of Integrative Biology. Kaufer, Kirby and Bentley are all members of the Helen Wills Neuroscience Institute.

Did I say the Election was over?

Do you make assumptions and project them on others?

Facts are facts. Before the “gaffe”, Akin had an 11% lead in the Polls over an Incumbent.

After the “gaffe”, Akin the Destroyer has the Support of only 35% of people Polled in MO.

All he has to do is convince the 65% who think he should give it up that he didn't say what he said. He has 70 days to pull that off but his stink is already on every Republican running for Office.

Akin, the protector of Obamacare. Who woulda thunk it?

BTW - Just to make you happy, which is one of my goals in life, I will substitute the word “DEFICIT” for the word “LOSS’. I hope that helps.

>Let’s see, his “gaffe” turned a slam dunk 11% LEAD into a 65% DEFICIT in less than 72 Hours<

Yeah, his “gaffe”. Let's see, his “gaffe” turned a slam dunk 11% LEAD into a 65% LOSS in less than 72 Hours.

Wrong. The party abandoning him and jumping on the media bandwagon of bashing him is what's hurting him the most. He wouldn't be losing Republican and conservative votes if the others in his party weren't promising to undermine his campaign and run 3rd party against him and stuff. He has 10 weeks like everyone else to make his case to the voters. It's shameful that people are judging him on one comment without knowing him, looking at his record and so forth. It's incredibly shallow. We know that he'll get to show who he really is to the voters of Missouri if he gets the chance to run a campaign.

You have Romney and the RNC to blame if they deny him funding and he loses the race. If he loses, you'll never know if he could've won if they hadn't denied funding. Especially if it's close. The egg is going to be on the GOP establishment's face where it belongs most likely before this is over. Their abandonment of one of their own over nothing but a Democrat and liberal media smear is disgraceful.

Great, the Tea Party came out for Sharron Angle too, none of that is worth a damn if you turn off independents and moderates because they think you’re a raging lunatic.

Its not possible to win elections without getting a good percentage of the moderates and independents, the same one’s he’s turned off with his crazy-as-hell rhetoric.

All the Akin cultists seem to forget that.

You are the raging lunatic. The guy did not rape anyone or beat anyone. You are acting like Chris Matthews gone wild. Your hatred is so over the top. I’m starting to think you are a democrat visiting FR trying to piss off conservatives so we won’t vote for Romney. I already have counted 3 people who looks like there walking. Is that what you want; to lose all the base? I bet Romney’s numbers drop because he and the gop has angered the conservatives so much, they won’t show. I know the family and riends in Mo I talked to think people should stay out of there business and quit telling them who can and can’t run. You want Romney to lose? Then tell romney and gop to keep it up. Akins will win. Lots of us are sending him money to make sure he does.

If all you hear is the headline “the party is giving up on their candidate, demanding he withdraw” are you going to support that guy? You’re going to assume he did something terrible. The GOP is running their own media smear campaign against one of their own. They’re shooting themselves in the foot and helping protect and preserve Obamacare. It’s time to stop the insanity, lay off Akin and give him a chance to right his campaign.

This has been posted on here no less than a dozen times, and refuted each times. Your among the latest to not understand what it is your even posting. It focuses primarily on chronic stress on long-term fertility and IN RATS...unless the woman is being raped daily...and is a rat... rape is not long-term chronic stress, I really don't understand why you keep arguing this point when its clear to the whole world that there's no way to win.

Bottomline, if the woman is ovulating and the rapist doesn't utilize a condom and ejaculates inside her, there's a good chance she's getting pregnant.

"In a Tuesday interview with The Christian Post, Dr. Gene Rudd, an obstetrician-gynecologist who is also senior vice president of Christian Medical & Dental Associations, said there is no evidence that pregnancies are rare among rape victims. "I don't know where [Akins is] coming from, but what he said, there's no basis for it," Rudd explained. Read more at http://www.christianpost.com/news/rape-pregnancies-not-rare-ob-gyn-says-80369/#UBwIimxuQsBAVBSg.99

“There are no words for this — it is just nuts,” said Michael Greene, a professor of obstetrics, gynecology and reproductive biology at Harvard Medical School." Read more here: http://www.kansascity.com/2012/08/20/3771226/doctors-dispute-akins-claim-but.html#storylink=cpy

Akin was wrong, he spoke out of term, he took some fireplace chat he heard somewhere, tried to be clever, looked like an idiot for it, apologized, said he was wrong, hopefully he doesn't say anything else stupid for the rest of the time he's running. The only thing worse than his stupidity is people trying to defend something so stupid.

wrong if you actually read Wilkies position paper, the only citation from the NEJM was from a 1977 article on the rate of intravaginal ejaculation during rape.
Please learn some basic science before advertising your ignorance so cheaply.

Akin is a loser, anyone with even a little political savvy knows a loser when they see one, just as people saw Angle and O'Donnell as losers and the cultists tried to attack them for it as well. The BEST thing that could happen is Akin stepping down, allowing Brunner or Steelman to step in and take on Obama Claire. You know, one of the two candidate's that she DIDN'T financially support.

Akin got backed by Obama Claire simply because she saw a mark and knew she could take advantage of his foolishness, well she's gotten more than her $2 million worth.

Ultimately I want to see a Republican win this seat, Akin won't do it, he's toxic and dead in the water politically, he should step down and let someone competent have crack at it.

I'll make you a bet, if Todd Akin is the winner on Election Day this year and becomes the Senator from MO, I'll publicly admit you were right and leave FreeRepublic forever, now if he doesn't win, can I trust you to do the same???

Jay Redhawk said: The GOP has accepted the leftist created stereotype of conservatism and wants nothing to do with [it] because that would be politically incorrect. In other words, the Republicans fear conservatism as much, if not more, than they do the socialism of the left.

BRAVO! You win the forum today, my friend! Stunningly brilliant, perfect and 1000% on-the-money analysis! My God, do you ever understand what the cancer is that's eating away at the GOP. They are gutless, spineless cowards and will sacrifice everything conservatives care about to win elections, even when they don't have to.

As far as the Repubs reconstituting a viable Akin candidacy I believe the Repubs have burned their bridges behind themselves in the retreat from Akin. As stupid and as ill thought Akin’s comments were I think the matter could have been dealt with/disposed of in a more better political discussion. Indeed the way the Repubs jumped on the matter leads me to believe that they have serious questions about the success of their campaign/candidates. Akin certainly didn’t help but putting a growing forest fire out with garden hoses generally isn’t a good effort.

Well, I'm not a Resident of MO, so I can't Vote for him. My concern is his impact on the Republicans getting back the Senate, and Akin is a one man wrecking crew.

The issue here is simple, Akin is just a stubborn SOB who won't admit his mistake, and his hilarious Apology Tour is just making it worse.

He alone is responsible for the outcry. He is not a Victim.
Don't blame the Adults in the room who understand how things work. Akin can't back away from using RAPE to somehow polish his Pro Life Credentials. All he has shown us is that he not ready for Prime Time.

The Electorate in MO is not populated by FR Posters. If it was, the impact of his stupidity would be severely diminished.

I find it amazing that I've posted literally dozens of statements from doctors, even Christian-based doctors, stating how wrong Akin was and people are still pulling out random articles that don't apply or quack doctors like Willke who have no credibility in medical science.

Either that or "well its that liberal science and liberal doctors." Funny me, when going through college majoring in biology, my science classes were the most straightforward and least-politicized.

I really hope these people don't go to "those liberal doctors" when they have a stroke, after all that would be hypocrisy, forgetting for a moment just how many conservatives there are in the healthcare field.
