They are not going to hand the nod to someone, even Jeb Bush, who hasn’t entered this race.
A brokered convention will get you Romney.
he wasnt my first choice, and I do have problems with things hes done in the past, but the man is cleary intelligent and articulate. This is a really tough primary to figure out
We're in a Catch-22 situation. The main problem, IMHO, is that thanks to John McCain, GW Bush, and Sandra Day O'Connor McCain-Feingold is the "law" of the land (I put "law" in scare quotes because McCain-Feingold is IMHO not anywhere near compatible with the First Amendment). At the time it was enacted, critics more knowledgable than I said that if in force in 1980 Ronald Reagan couldn't have run for the presidency. So I have to think that Gov. Palin and possibly others have been dissuaded from entering the lists because of "campaign finance reform."All CFR laws are unconstitutional, IMHO, and McCain-Feingold differs from the others only in being added on top of the others and in being more explicitly unfair. At root, all CFR is predicated on the unconstitutional assumption that the money spent by The New York Times, Inc. to print its newspapers is superior at law to your money or mine, or your money and mine. The distinction between them and us is only that we have not bought a printing press yet. We are entirely within our rights to buy, and operate, one - at our convenience. And to editorialize for or against candidates.
In fact, FR is actually just that. The Constitution stipulates the promotion "of science and the useful arts" as a legitimate objective of the federal government, and stipulatesAmendment 9 - The enumeration in the Constitution, of certain rights, shall not be construed to deny or disparage others retained by the peoplethat the Bill of Rights is a floor under, rather than a ceiling above, the rights of the people. So the fact that FR uses no ink or paper, and no trucks to transport physical newspapers, but does use computers and various electronic communications technology, is quite beside the point.
I concur that the fight IS long overdue. However, there are a number of big fish to fry here. Not only will we NOT survive another RINO, we also will NOT survive another 4 years of Obama.
So, we appear to be trapped between the devil and the deep blue sea. This would be an easy choice if Reagan were still alive and could serve another term. And all choices would be easy if we could pick them like leaves from a tree.
What we have to evaluate is how much we, as a party, can tolerate and STILL keep America off life support. The left has driven a deep wedge in the country that is fracturing us along political lines and conservatives are equally fractured between "moderate" establishment Republicans and Tea Party conservatives. A brokered convention that shoves Jeb Bush down our throats is a win for Obama. The same may also be true if Palin ends up the winner of a brokered convention. Personally, I like her and would vote for her in a heartbeat, but too many other conservatives (or Republicans) DON'T.
We have been maneuvered by the left into a poor position with the only two realistic contenders being Newt first and Santorum second. I don't know enough about Santorum to say absolutely, but he could potentially guarantee another Obama term. Newt also has his detractors, especially among women, and that also raises the spectre of another Obama term.
Whoever our candidate ends up being, we know that Obama intends to lob volley after volley of nuclear missiles at him or her. And, with his "Truth Team" (propaganda brownshirts) willing to do all of his dirty work on the ground, we are going to have a major uphill battle, especially if our candidate follows along with other Republicans and refuses to get into the mud with the Dems and REALLY talk about Obama's record. S, at the emd of the day, our candidate, whether one of the remaining candidates or a walk-on brokered candidate, needs to be able to pull ALL factions of the party together as a cohesive unit.
I just don't see that person in any of the names being tossed around.
I agree, we're in a poor position. Romney is a non-starter as far as I'm concerned, as is Paul. I don't know enough about Santorum but my perception is that he's weak.
Which leaves us Newt or a surprise candidate from a brokered convention. I like Jeb Bush, but the Bush dynasty has had its run and Jeb is a non-starter for me. I like Sarah, but there are a bunch of folks who have fallen for the DBM's portrayal of her as a political lightweight and won't vote for her . . . . . even if it means another 4 years of Obama.
As I pointed out in my reply to the post before this one, if we end up with a surprise candidate from a brokered convention, he or she will have to be someone that our broadly fractured party can get behind and support. IOW, a uniter. I just don't see that person anywhere on the horizon.
Palin is the last person an open convention would result in. The GOP convention is run by the GOP establishment, and they’ll be doing the deals in smoke-filled back rooms in Tampa. The GOP establishment are the guys shoving Romney down our throats. They gave us Bush 41, Bush 42, and Dole. An open convention would give us Jeb Bush, Romney, or similar.
