Well, sometimes it's just expected in the workplace. While my current employer allows "casual dress" nearly 100% of the time, when I was employed as a field service tech, I had to wear slacks, dress shirt, and tie, and my first action on-site was to tuck my tie into my shirt so it wouldn't get caught in a computer. And later, when I worked as an network system instructor, I was expected to wear a suit and tie any time I was teaching, possibly since the students were each paying about $500 a day for my time, and I had to present an image as a "professional."
But now I only wear a suit and tie when I go to funerals or religious services.
