He bough a grand piano for the lobby of the Bandley Dr building just so my then roommate could play it.

You tell me, is that the action of a selfish son of a bitch?

Jobs gave me the ability to own an ipod.

HE didn't give money to horrible liberal charities that would work to make life miserable for conservatives.

That's good enough for me. Hats off to Jobs - may the rest of the US wake up and STOP funding liberal nonprofits.

>> there are entire industries that were built out of what came out of his brain, employing many thousands who, because of Jobs can make their way in the world with no need for charity.

I cut my teeth programming on the Mac, in 1985. I’m by no means an Apple cult worshipper now, but even twenty-five years ago it was apparent that Steve Jobs was not only a genius, but one who knew how to get things DONE. That is an exceptionally rare talent set that the world will miss going forward.

Jobs will always have my profound respect.

FRegards

I think most on this thread have misread this piece. Perhaps the final line will make it clear the point this guy is trying to make:

Selfish son of a bitch? Don’t know. Doesn’t matter. A model for prosperity and improving the human condition… now that’s a legacy worth leaving.

Ya get it now?

I don't know whether to laugh or cry at your logic. He didn't buy it - Apple leased it, and then wrote it off. And the reason he did it was because he was in an internal war with the Apple II group at the time, who he was demonizing as stupid, uncouth, mouth-breathing losers compared to the Mac group. That's why he got them pianos and fruit drinks and massages and all the other perks, to show up the other group.

As for the rest of this thread - the idea that as long as he earned his money in a way that didn't get him thrown in jail, it means he was a stand-up guy - pretty much sums up every caracature of conservatives the liberals scream about. Not to mention the Christian absurdity: "And Jesus spake, "go thou and makest billions while avoiding the dungeon, and let no man therefore claim ye foul at heart, for thy money cleansest thee in the eyes of God."

Now what chapter and verse was that from?

1st You are a Plick.
2nd I knew Jobs and Woz. Nice guys each with their own very unique personalities.
It ain’t none of your business what he or they or anyone did or does for charity or humanity.

Jobs and Woz have done plenty for charity and even supported my charities.

Why don’t you do something productive like get a job IN THE PRIVATE SECTOR and produce something of value.

Even if you are a ditch digger, at the end of the day you can look down at the hole you dug and say “That’s my Hole and I’m proud of it”.

Your class warfare, worry and envy of others is pathetic and demostrates your lack of character in your uninformed and bogus attempt to smear a man’s name.

WTF did he ever do to you?

Friggin Loser.

Hey Nully! Didn’t realize you knew him as well.

You are right. Jobs was a nice guy.

The author of this pathetic screed is a total loser.

Maybe he was miserly with his charity, but through 2004, he’s on record of contributing over $200,000 to the Democrat Party and several Dem candidates, including Rahm Emanuel, Nancy Pelosi, and Teddy Kennedy.

Great post. (Also kind of a clever choice of an excerpt. A good way to learn how many posters read the whole thing before commenting. Most failed to realize the article is a tribute and not a hit piece.)

Good for him. If he doesn’t want to waste his money on some scam of a charity, he shouldn’t have to. As for minimizing taxes - again, good for him.

A lot of philanthropists only get started after retirement, in their 60s, 70s, and 80s. Jobs didn't have that opportunity.

Jobs did take stabs at setting up a foundation and other philanthropic projects, but business took up too much of his time.

As head of Apple he was taking a $1 a year salary. I know, I know, he had millions and millions, but still it's an indication that money wasn't everything for him.

We'll find out over time if Steve Jobs made large contributions and what charities he made them too.

P.S. Watch out for emails purporting to be from the "Steve Jobs Charitable Foundation." They're a scam.

So is this post with an anti Job slant against the FR rules anti Apple posts?

Jobs had a right to do as he wanted with his money. So what if he was a scrooge with it.

I've concluded Jobs was the kind of old style liberal that's near extinction; it's been replaced by progressive Marxism. He was a 'bleeding heart' but capitalist.

Talking about education in a Smithsonian interview 16 years ago, he argued there was a lack of competition, that unions and bureaucrats had robbed it of market competition. He stated be believed in equal opportunity, not outcome. He wanted vouchers and merit-based teacher retention, not monopolies and tenure.

I detest the "look-at-me-aint-i-grand" thing. It's even worse with Bill Gates because his idea of "charity" is Planned Parenthood and the UN population fund.

Steve Jobs made money the old-fashioned way: he earned it. If he wanted to give it away or not, it was his prerogative to do with his fortune as he saw fit. Everyone else can just go pound sand.
