I’m as anti-union as they come. Unions warp & destroy markets as easily as illegal immigration does.
Your supply and demand issue, taking it out, is valid, and dealing with theoreticals like we are, who knows where that price breaking point would be for certain goods and services. I only stopped short because we could make this an entire book.
And yes, illegal immigration MUST stop and it should have been stopped 50 years ago, and if it had, none of this would be the case and our economy would have evolved totally differently and likely evolved much better.
My only points for this exercise were this: A: this immigration HAS happened and it is now so ingrained in our economy - some of it in good ways as well as the bad - that unwinding it is just more complicated than most think it is and that in some ways, we all benefit from it as well as all pay the price for it.
...and B: there is little difference on the work force between legal and illegal hispanics, since they look the same, their paperwork looks the same, and the things like e verify etc are still new and still flawed.
I never was in favor of it, and never think it should have happened, and think we should do everything we should do to stop it. What happened is, since I pointed out that they were now part of the supply and demand curve of everything, people assumed I liked the fact that this was the case. NO, I don’t....but it is the case.
I feel like a secure border and a removal of hand out benefits and a deportation of apprehended criminals would unwind this problem in a few years to maybe a decade anyway in a manner that would not disrupt our already fragile economy. And I would am in favor of all of that happening.
Therefore my arguments are not sophistry - we want 90% of the same thing - and if we got that 90%, the problem would be all but solved....which we both want.
I’ll tell you how broken the system is: Meg Whitman, one of the richest and smartest business women in America tried to verify her one single domestic employee through this system, and she failed. Think about that. Meg Whitman and a single employee.
So I ask you this: if Meg Whitman cannot successfully hire a staff of one due to the government screwed up system, what chance does Joe’s Landscaping Have of successfully vetting his staff of, say, 50, or whatever? The government has screwed this pooch for 50 years or so.
I do appreciate your civil tone & welcome your POV.
Suffice it to say I generally do not agree that American citizens offer as poor and uneconomical source of labor as some allege - to the contrary it is sufficient to meet all of our labor needs (those areas it cannot should probably be automated anyway), so obviously I do not agree we should accept the status quo of 20 some odd million illegals in country.
And I fully understand that I'm likely barking at the moon - its too late to reverse the damage - though I'll never accept it.
I do appreciate your civil tone & welcome your POV.
Ignore #64.
I also appreciate the civil tone and the POV. I’ll tell you, 22 years in business totally changed my thought process on a lot of things, and not all of it for the good.
I understand a lot of folks don’t agree with me, and all I can tell you is that my opinions are the opinions of a staunch hard core economic small government conservative with above average intelligence and guided by a faith in God and 22 years of day to day experience in the two Carolina’s and Georgia.
I might be wrong on some points, but it is through that template that every syllable of opinion I gave out came - and I only gave it because I passionately want us to get this issue right. That is sincerely my only agenda for this (and actually, any) discussion.
Look forward to jousting again....anytime.
I’d disagree and say it’s just window dressing, and for these reasons:
1. He’s a supposed convert to pro-life from pro-abortion.
2. He chose a pro-abortion Lt Governor AFTER his conversion.
Those two facts make him at best a “squishy” pro-lifer....undependable.
I so agree with you.
In the 1950’s after WWII our immigration system functioned beautifully...an enormous flood of European and other immigrants were vetted and processed into the US. They were checked out for medical issues, criminal background and had to have a legal/financial sponsor here before they could come. A sponsor that would be responsible if they got sick, etc.
the system worked. Why can’t we have that again?
the slang term for these legal immigrants was “ DP’s “—short for displaced persons. They worked hard, learned english, and demanded their kids do well in school...they were more American than Americans!
We have only ourselves to blame for the current mess!
Agree with your comments in #48.
I liked him, but I’m turned off with the anchor baby education crap....To me, Illegals I don’t care how old they are should be outta this country.....
