Pine cones are great for starting fires also.

Thanks for the additional information, but I’ll still pass on iodine related water treatment options.
Cryptosporidium is an issue with the surface water here and state-wide, I don’t feel comfortable with just iodine related treament - iodine + good filter might be a better choice.
In the end, everyone must made an informed choice based on their area.... and live with the results.

Something I learned at Christmas, steel wool makes really good fire starters. You light it, blow on it and it is red hot before you know it and you can get several uses from it.

Thank you for posting this. We have lots of little ones underfoot and the hubby and I have not gone through any SHTF scenarios. With him working out of the home, we definitely need to have a plan for what to do if we’re separated at the moment. I appreciate the reminder!

quick, easy and certain fire starter. Save your dryer lint! Yes! Dryer lint. Also save a few egg cartons of the paper variety. Get a block of paraffin (available at most grocery stores). Melt the paraffin in a can or pan. Place some lint in the sections of the egg carton. Pour paraffin in the section to cover the lint. That idea's a keeper...

I’d trade the wire cutter / lineman’s pliers for a pair of 10” curved-jaw vicegrips with the wire cutter at the base of the jaws. Preferrably a pair of them. They’ll cut through the chain link fence, and get you past a wide variety of fasteners in the bargain.
To: tacticalogic
Good idea - thanks for the tip. I can see the practical applications for a pair of those.

I think I'll put together a modest kit and take a hike with it; There's a few miles of slightly rough woodland trail maintained by my development, but seemingly nobody uses it, so I'll put it to use. These are really good skills to have even without a SHTF scenario.
Obviously can't pack weapons though.

That’s the ticket. It also pays to drive or walk your escape routes in your spare time. I’ve got several ways out of my work area. It helps that I’m less than a hundred yards or so away from an industrial area and a huge train yard.
