Well, NO - he was the lib and Fred Barnes was the conservative of the Beltway Boys. I miss the half-hour show, it was entertaining in the genre of the old Point/Counterpoint style, like Hannity and Colmes, Buckley (I believe)/Vidal, etc.

I love the McLaughlin Group - it’s a free-for-all debate with some interesting characters, evenly divided between libs and conservatives. Over the years, some different and impressive regulars/panelists, including the late Robert Novak. Now, they include (smart) Monica Crowley, (funny) Pat Buchanan, (irritating loudmouth) Eleanor Clift, Mort Zuckerman (billionaire owner of US News & World Report) and sometimes Clarence Page. John McLaughlin has the last word, and he’s basically conservative as well as a very sharp cookie.
Here’s some interesting stuff about it, just FYI:
McLaughlin’s style has been parodied by many comedians and other commentators, most notably Dana Carvey of Saturday Night Live. McLaughlin made a cameo on one of Carvey’s parody sketches, and adopted some of his gags (such as the “metaphysical certitude” line and occasionally referring to Eleanor Clift as “Eleanor, Gee I Think You’re Swell-anor”). The program has also been included in a few major films, including Dave and Independence Day.
Some Former Guests: Lionel Barber, Arnaud de Borchgrave, John Fund, Arianna Huffington, Joe Klein, Lawrence Kudlow, Dick Morris, Tony Snow, Christopher Hitchens, Rush Limbaugh.
It’s a fun half-hour worth watching, IMHO. You can catch previous episodes (it airs on Fri. and again on Sun. on pbs) online.
