Excel was originally written for the Mac and remains probably the best spreadsheet for the Mac.
Power Point works fine on a Mac.
Make sure to keep at least one version of MS Office around to double-check the formatting of documents to and from OpenOffice.
On big, complex documents, I’ve seen MS Office formatting get gummed up in Open Office.
Other than that, and the fact they totally steal* MS Office’s (old, usable) interface, I’m a big fan.
(* Yes, I know that familiarity is a good thing, but the OO team xeroxed the UI way too much, to the point that a reasonable person might find it actionable. UIs don’t develop themselves, they take time, money, blood, and sweat.)

OpenOffice... and Apple’s iWork suite - Keynote (powerpoint), Numbers (spreadsheet), and Pages (desktop publisher/word processing). And for email, there are any number of Linux compatible email clients that will work on Macs, and Apple’s own Mail app.
RE: Microsoft has launched Office 2011 for Mac to allow Mac users to avail of the latest versions of the company’s productivity software.
Judging from the mood my wife comes home in every day and all the expletives she directs towards MS Outlook, I think I will stick with MS Office for Mac 2008.
The only thing that Mac lacks as far as MS Office capability is an equivalent for MS Access.
As far as spreadsheet, word processing, presentation software, all of Apples iWork products are far superior and read and write to MS Office Word, Excel and Powerpoint.
In fact, very often I can’t open MS Office files that were created on Windows machines when trying to open them using MS Office for Mac 2008, but I can open them with Apple iWork programs. Then use the files and save them as MS Office files to send back to my cohorts.
Isn’t the openoffice version for the Mac called NeoOffice?
That’s what I am running on my Mac and it is fabulous! - and not just because it’s free.
OpenOffice has a Mac version, it’s cross platform from Windows, to Mac, to Solaris and *nix.
