A visit to the Hospital this morning for my daughter, Teen2. A very painful foot has been diagnosed as possibly gout.
Gout? Hmm.
I’m older than I thought, to have a child suffering from gout.

Know almost nothing about gout, but really sorry to hear Teen2 might have it.

Just hoping this cough I have, which often ends with a verbal "whoop" to keep it from degenerating into something (instantly) worse is not whooping cough.

True, true. T’wll be painful.

But ya gotta admit, on a scale of teenage problems from mono to mumps to a broken elbow to getting braces or acne or growing pains, getting a case of “gout” has got to rank up there in terms of “cool factor” that can’t be beat by anything else.

O hai. We came home from supper, and DP walked Sally down to her friend’s house while Tom and I cleaned the snake’s cage. Then DP called and told me to bring wine over to a neighbor’s, so I did. We sat around until about 9:30. Now we’ve put kidz to bed, and I’m going, too.

It’s a curious thing. We checked it out, and we said, “It says here that you shouldn’t eat this, and that.”

And she said, “I don’t eat that, and this.”

And it’s true. She doesn’t eat the things she shouldn’t eat.

So how is she to avoid it now? It’s like those energy advise messages. They tell us what we shouldn’t do to waste energy and we just laugh. We haven’t done any energy wasteful things for decades.

At least there’s medicine.

Classically, it was a “rich man’s disease” - of fat feet and big feasts and high protein diets (when most in the world were starving to death and didn’t live long enough to get ill from gout!), and low exercise typical of the kings and high-lived royalty.

So now a teenager who eats right? Odd.

I had whooping cough as a tiny tot, but even though I recovered, I never lost the cough. Every time I’ve gotten a cold, which has degenerated into bronchitis, I’ve “whooped.” It always sounds worse than it is.

Still, I don’t wish it on anyone, no matter what the age. Hope you feel better soon!

My son suffers from gout. “Rich man’s disease,” it’s called. It often keeps him off work.

Hopefully, Teen2 will learn how to keep it under control. And it IS painful!! Some folks are prone to it for some reason.

It is from uric acid crystals migrating to the major toe joint. Don’t ask me how. About the only food I recall that can trigger it is cabbage. Of course there are more, but I don’t remember what they are.
