I had the same problem Fri morning, my ISP is Time Warner Hudson Valley, NY area. It’s working good now.
There's a site for that: http://downforeveryoneorjustme.com/www.freerepublic.com. It tries to access the requested site and reports back its success or failure.
No luck with FR in Los Angeles all day today — stopped trying hours ago but now, obviously, all seems well.
The past five or six hours its been impossible to get on here.
Were you trying to register at altfreerepublic? If you're having problems registering, let me know and I'll see what I can do to fix it.

Hey, Jim, et al., I commiserate. Many night late, stuff doesn’t work, alone, dark, trying to figure out why it doesn’t happen. And... and ... and then you got it! And when they come in the morning, ah, gosh, gee, all in a day’s work.
And my friend tells me about the cold of the concrete from the shop floor on legs that have become stilts, in the middle of the night to make a deadline because the customer needs it in the morning.
And bringing in the crop — well before dawn and long after dark — falling asleep in work clothes after quick supper and waking up to do it it again — for weeks — ...
and the quiet satisfaction and confidence that you can meet the challenges ... and
And that’s us AMERICANS ... down to the wire, exhausted, tired, facing hopeless odds ... and ...

I am just stating what has been done in the past.
No opinion by me on neccesity or not.
I went over to yahoo and did not see any message from JR, must have missed it.
It was nice getting the auto message sent out as it let me know it was not my webtv dial up.
I saw posts at yahoo from others saying they could not get in here and that pretty much sums it up for me.
FR is not accessible at time period for what ever reason. The last thing I worry about, even though it does cross my mind, is that some person/group pulled the plug here.
Give JR a break. I’m sure he’s at least on his second tube of ointment to fix the problem.
And if anyone’s tempted to make this glitch HUGH, SERIES or BUSH’S FAULT, there’s a 12-gauge ZOT in your future!
When having trouble accessing Free Republic goto http://www.downforeveryoneorjustme.com/ type in www.freerepublic.com and it will tell you if the site is down just for you (perhaps due to an ISP issue), or for everyone on the interwebs...

Answers? Are you kidding?? When was the last time you saw an explanation for one of these interminable outages here??
The MO for this is to let a dozen or so vanity threads like this one go on for a few days until everyone abandons them out of sheer frustration. There will be no answers forthcoming out of anyone here at FR. There never are.
Now if there was something wrong with the collection system that accumulates all of those Freeper donations, you can be damned sure that would be fixed, and pronto, and an apology issued to get the tap turned back on. But if the site is up and down all day, or it takes 15 minutes for your posts to appear, you can suck hind tit before you’ll get anything out of this website’s administration about the whats and whys.

The problems started about 9:00 P.M. EST last night, got so bad I went and watched some old British movie. Not one of the good ones, some trashy BBC, made for TV. Seems to be working fine now. Cheerio.

This is a fantastic site ~ Jim & John care like you wouldn’t believe and YES answers are posted on the yahoo site! How could they post answers here and why would Mods keep posting when the site is limping along during whatever issue is currently going on?
I’m sorry if people think I’m attacking you or if you feel that way but YES this is an attack! You complain and yet what have you done to offer to help fix the problem? Sure, there’s not likely much we can do but offer as usually John has it well in hand, but if you think it’s that bad, LEAVE! There are plenty of folks that love it here.
As for FReepathons, with the amount of bandwidth etc that is used here, how the hell else do you think Jim is going to pay for this? If this was all free and a server fairy zapped down totally new equipment for Jim & John I’m sure we’d not need to run FReepathons so often but hmmm, that hasn’t happened lately. If you can provide some, please do, until then quit your whining or go join another site!
And I’m pinging the Mods, Jim and John before the flood of complaints comes in about my rant here. People like you make me ill and make me realize WHY I joined FR! Because I’m sick of whiners that point out the problems in this world but don’t do anything to fix them. If it’s so bad here why do you keep coming back? Surely there’s somewhere else that will make you happier.
Me too—yesterday it took a while to be able to pull it up... my first impulse was to think it had been hacked by the hater crowd and maybe they were trying.
Seems better today.Probably traffic heavy which is a kind of good thing.
