While we’re at it lets subsidize the horse buggy, carbon paper, manual typewriter and pay phone industies too.

The fourth estate immediately ceases to function as the fourth estate when it relies on the government for continued operation. It must be independent of the government in order to perform its watchdog role.

That said, how bout FR apply for a fat grant?

Americans might not get the news they need

And who decides what news is needed and what news isn’t needed?

""Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.""

The first amendment makes no mention of a government-funded or government-sanctioned press. It guarantees ALL people the freedom of speech. We are all the press!

I contend that this guy's idea of the press is a press that is tightly controlled by the government, much like the USSR. Clearly, they are upset that people are obtaining information outside of the tightly-controlled "mainstream" media (aka the propoganda wing of the democrat party). Even more upsetting to the leftists is that their tightly-controlled media is failing.

Notice that the Wall Street Journal and a few other newspapers are doing well, whereas the New York Times and other leftist papers are failing miserably. It isn't because of the medium - it's because of the content.

I couldn’t agree with you more.

Much of the press that Bollinger considers the true press is in financial trouble because of their bias and leftist content. That media put themselves in the fix they’re in and the government (taxpayers) have no business bailing them out.

If the news is presented to the public as it really happens and not ignored if it is conflict with that particular medias beliefs, they will do just fine financially all by themselves.

So are we to believe that there is a news shortage now - or there will soon be one - absent government intervention? That’s funny - I haven’t noticed this.

Carbon paper, horse powered buggies, and manual typewriters
are all available commercially new. (Basing my conclusions
about the buggies on the Amish) I wish carbon paper was
cheaper, it has various uses. Judging by the past decade
in NYC, many don’t want current newspapers as a gift.

I trust everyone here has seen the Michael S Malone
Edgelings/ABCNews prediction of just this move to
government subsidy for the MSM print media. “Media’s
Presidential Bias and Decline” c. October 2008.

Columbia University President Lee Bollinger joins the drumbeat of those proposing fixes that are guaranteed to make the MSM much, much worse — and he wants to do it with your tax dollars.
