The 12 gauge shotgun is such a versatile tool.
Here’s yet another use for my little friend.

But, as you also know, big companies like IBM patent things for many reasons. Such as pre-emptively capturing IP so that some competitor doesn’t, and building a portfolio of IP around a field of use that can then be sold to another company, or become the nucleus of a spin-off that can add shareholder value.

I hold three patents from a different Fortune 50 company so I understand your point. But I also know how much money the company has made from licensing and enforcement of it’s IP portfolio, and it’s far in excess of what has been made from actual in-house product implementations.

My luck it would stop me smack dab in the middle of the intersection.....

I would definitely purchase a classic car if this ever was implemented. My son (technology wiz) would love a car that drives itself. I keep telling him, not in my house. Drive the vehicle yourself. All these technology wizards are making things so easy for new generations, that our new generations will be complete idiots when it comes to doing anything for themselves.

In the old days I use to be able to tweak my own vehicle if my carburator got stuck or a spark plug misfired. Now I can’t figure out what all these electronic parts are that are in the car. I have to pay someone else.

Can anyone say unintended consequences. This is so stupid I am willing to bet some local government will go for it.

There very well be a valid reason to run a red light.

In California it is legal (in most cases) to turn right on a red light so their super dooper let us control the people idea will not work.

Shutting down and restarting engines at stop lights will
significantly shorten the life of the starting motors.

Stick to computers! Remember the 360 anyone?

I remember the 1401 (that was before tape drives.....punch cards only).

To be honest, mine does too (it turned 15 this year). I was just being a wise guy.

IBM’s squatter patent.

why not just make cars that can tell what color the light is and let the driver decide?

How about a hacker or their who steals the light transmitter in order to rob people.

Just steal the transmitter, no hacking required, and then just shut down cars and rob people.

Wouldn’t stopping your car for just a stop light actually use just as much

Not if it is in good tune. It is one of the techniques my fanatic gas saver daughter does to get 50 mpg from her 2002 Honda Civic.

On a societal level, I’d say about 20 % of cars are “in tune”...but hey, maybe the Feds will mandate that next...weekly tune ups to save the planet.

Why not make stop lights that can “see” there’s no traffic on the green streets and switch them to red. What’s more wasteful than having cars idle at a red light when the green light streets are empty.

Yes, stopping the engine and starting it again likely uses more fuel than the short duration of a stop light

I think in the era of carburetors, this was true. However, with fuel injection, this is no longer the case. All hybrids use cylinder shut down or turn the engine off when stopped.

Personally, when ever I hear of a 'smarter planet', I know what's being said is energy management (and making money), such as rationing electricity during the day to homes, and resetting parking meters when you pull out of the space so the next fella doesn't get any free time.

I think a better "smart light' would be one that turns red as the last car in a queue goes thru, and turns green for the crossing traffic. Instead, (we've all seen this) we all sit there with no cars crossing in front of us, waiting for the light to change after the cars have gone through, then witnessed the light turn red just as a car rolls up and has to stop. That would be a smart light.

IBM should stick to more useful pursuits. Like writing its name really tiny, one Xenon atom at a time.

Let IBM install it at all their installations first.

I don’t want stop lights turning off my motor. I don’t give a sh1t if idling burns a little of MY gas I PAID FOR. I can decide to turn my car off if I want, thanks a lot IBM and big brother.

Geez, IBM has jumped the frickin shark. THIS is what passes for brilliant ideas at IBM? Wow. Plug the damn plug already.

Yeah, and keypunching and verifying each 80 column card.

When I tell the grandchildren about these early computers, they ask if I learned to write with a hammer and chisel.

A long time ago FORD stood for “Fix Or Repair Daily”, but that was then,GM now stands, not only for “Government Motors”, but “Garbage Mobile”. Those things are POS rolling money pits. That Beretta had extensive engine, transmission, and electrical work done and still wouldn`t run well, and don`t get me started on the POS Cavalier it replaced.
