Taking women's handbags instead of simply searching them is an overkill. If they'd let you on an airplane with your handbag, why not a townhall meeting?

The general idea I get joanie is that Specter and Tsongas believe HR3200 or something very like it will pass both houses of Congress. Their job at Town Hall events is simply to advise their constituents of what is coming. In short, they think it's already a done deal. They are not there to listen to their constituents, to receive advice from them, to hear their concerns. Nope. It's a done deal, so just shut up and listen to us tell you how wonderful the healthcare reform is going to be. And we're gonna get it, whether we want it or not, whether we like it or not.
Sigh. It is so very clear to me that the current political class thinks it is our rulers. They don't work for us; we work for them.
That referendum idea is interesting. But it would still miss the point. The federal government has no constitutional warrant to be in the healthcare/social services business in the first place. What would really be needed — if anybody cared about legislation actually being constitutional for a change — is a constitutional amendment — the whole Article Five business. Let Congress draft whatever they want, then send it out to the states for ratification.
Of course, this will never happen. Ratification of a constitutional amendment would take time. But 0bama is hot to trot. He wants to rush this through in the dead of night, by hook or by crook.
HR3200 is a Trojan Horse. As long as it gives the federal government the slightest toe hold WRT the "public option," they'll be happy to pass anything. 0bama has already said it would take additional years of tweaking to get the thing right. That tells me that whatever Congress passes is "just the beginning" anyway.
Must run for now. Time to write to my Congressperson....

You not only attempted to be a participant in the meeting (which it would appear, from both your and our experiences, is all but impossible), but you attempted to defy senseless regulations, and you sought out supporters of this travesty in order to have an honest debate.
Too many of us draw the 'participation line' at attendance. When you were denied the kind of participation you desired, you sought it out in a one-on-one discussion.
God bless you, betty! You are a modern American patriot, and your actions confirm your every word.

What I really wanted to do, however, was to talk with people on the other side of the aisle. So I went to the three ladies with the "Healthcare Reform NOW!!!" sign. They would not give me the time of day.
There's something curious to report about the three ladies which I haven't mentioned before now. They had observed me speaking with the "LaRouchie," David; and saw that he gave me "literature." One asked if I would give her this "literature." And I said, "no, I won't give it to you, but that's no big deal, because you can go right over to David and I'm sure he'd be glad to give it to you." I mentioned that David was a perfectly rational and gracious person, so why not go over and have a word with him?
That's about when the "Well, she's driving, so I have to leave now" comment presented itself. Whence the three ladies absented themselves from the scene.
It is so obvious "the other side" does NOT want to talk to people like you and me — average Americans with a good grip on reality.
But I will not stop taking this issue "to the streets" in any way I can. HR3200 is an unlivable exercise in pure insanity. I will not, and cannot accept it. And that's the bottom line.

Those efforts, repeated millions of times across this nation are having a telling effect.
The American people are waking up. They intrinsically know that any major overhaul to something as critical as health care is going to impact every one of them and they want to know how it will impact them.
And what they are learning is making them madder than sin...as well it should.
This is a truth that no amount of spin and smoke from Obama, the DNC, the libs, or the MSM will cover.
They may try in an effort to get the reps to ignore the building ground swell (actually a tidal wave) so that they vote for the plan...but that does not negate or do away with the reality of what is happening.
In fact, for the democrats and the left, it will only make things worse.
They are setting themselves up for the largest turnover in the House adn Senate in the history of this nation...and it could’t happen to a more deserving group of people.

Oh Jeff, it seems to me the easiest thing in the world to do is to stand on the side of truth. Just plainly say to others what you heartfully believe, with kindness, graciousness, and respect, whenever you have the opportunity.
If the American people can do just that one simple thing, then we can stop building this ridiculous "Tower of Babel," and build a lasting, free civil society instead, inculcated in the eternal principles expounded in the Declaration of Independence — the charter of a sovereign people.
Or we can prove to the world that the American people, like any and every other people, are "slaves by nature."
But if we were ever to admit that possibility, then we make liars out of the Framers of the Constitution.
I do not believe these man were in any way, shape or form "liars." They told us eternal truths about human liberty and dignity. But realized that the rest of it, the implementation of such understanding, was "all up to US," up to every generation of Americans successively.
With HR3200, the shadowy culture war of the past, say, 70 years has been dragged out into full public daylight.
It's about time; I'm grateful for that.

My entire approach to these people was simply to ask questions in a polite and friendly way. They had no answers — perhaps they didn't understand the questions.
Sigh. In any event, it seems they beat a hasty retreat.
