25% polled disagree that government derive their power from the just consent of the governed??
An example of the morons living in our nation.
Pretty close to the percentage who describe themselves as “liberal.” I’d say there’s considerable overlap there.
Could have fooled me
They may pay lip service to those ideals, but that is as far as it goes. America has squandered the freedom so many good men and women fought and died for.
Pretty amazing that 25% do not agree with the view that governments derive their only just authority from the consent of the governed.” Such is the state of education today that we are raising folks with a slave mentality.
On the other hand, I’m not sure I want to be under the kind of gov’t these folks consent to!
It is more correct to state that Americans SAY they embrace the ideals of the Declaration of Independence. Talk is cheap(for the moment).
An America that can elect a Barack Obama cannot honestly claim to embrace the Founders’ vision enshrined in the Declaration.
They may hold the ideals, but they have no clue as to the true meaning of freedom.
As long as it does not cost them anything.
Think they actually have an idea of what the are being polled on?
Scary isn't it? I almost don't even feel like celebrating "Independence" day. It no longer means anything. We are in the process of morphing our country into a European Socialist nanny state, undoing most everything our forefathers had in mind when we declared our independence in the first place.
Obama was elected by a combination of morons, money and media.
Makes one wonder what percentage of the respondents couldn't really understand the question. The terms "just consent" and "governed" might confound a lot people who are not accustomed to grappling with such lofty concepts. LOL.
Fifty-six percent (56%) agree with the view that governments derive their only just authority from the consent of the governed. The problem here is that "consent of the governed", unchecked, can result in rule of the mob (i.e. pure democracy). Obama is ruling with the consent of a majority of the voting public, and I don't see anyone here celebrating his rule as an embracing of the values of the Declaration.
In a constitutional republic, there are boundaries to the "consent of the governed". Just because they consent to something, it doesn't necessarily make it legitimate for the government to carry it out.
In other words, the public's perception of the phrase "the consent of the governed" is completely warped. Thank you, MSM and government schools.
Interestingly, one-in-four Americans (25%) disagree.
A lot of people on this thread are dissing this 25%, but I think some follow-up questions would be in order to determine what they were thinking here. For example, they could be thinking about the biblical teaching (e.g. Romans 13:1) that governments derive their just authority from God Himself.
Declaration of Independence [with Jefferson's original text]
Ping for a possible alternate interpretation of the 25%.
We have a terrible way of showing it, given the marxist government that now runs the country.
Yes, it would be interesting to know what they were thinking. But those who believe that such authority comes from a Higher source would probably have understood the intent of the question. I think these 25% just want a benign (ha ha) dictator who can take things from the rich & give it to them.
As another poster pointed out, 25% is approximately the number of folks who self identify as liberal. No doubt lots of overlap there.
