I think if they want, as a private business, to choose some of these practices, that is fine as a private business. Things like not charging interest but instead fees does not violate anyone else's rights. As long as they don't adopt some of the practices that violate other's rights, that's when they cross the line of their own personal freedom. The problem is that many who are pushing Sharia law, are pushing for the whole package, not just adopting banking practices. For example, the idrib is a direct violation of another's individual rights (beating or killing a wife when she transgresses.) Rajm (stoning) is another aspect of Sharia law that crosses the line of personal freedom to violating the freedom (life) of another. The challenge with Sharia law is that for every guideline that may be acceptable (washing hands, prayers, not charging interest, not gambling, etc) there is an unacceptable punishment for not following that guideline (idrib, rajm, etc).

I can’t believe I’m seeing some FReepers defending sharia banking in America. This nation is so doomed.

Once again we see how they use the freedoms of the West against us.

We just elected the most left wing president in the history on the United States. Choose your battles.

What do you suggest we do about a bank that doesn’t adhere to you beliefs?

Are you proposing violence against the bank?

More government regulations outlawing banks that do not charge interest and charge fees?

Government regulations that forbid banks from stopping the consumption of alcohol on the premises?

Government regulations that would forbid banks to stop having Christmas parties?

I hear you on the creeping islamification of America. Once you start the ball rolling on using government force against things you dislike, that ball may just roll back at you and crush you.

I never said anything about violence I said that sharia law should be made illegal.

Some people on FR are virulently anti-Mormon. Do we drive them from America? Why or why not?

I think a lot of people aren’t seeing the full picture, with all Sharia practices come a penalty. While the practice, such as not charging interest, may be fine and acceptable, not violating anyone else’s rights, the penalties that Sharia imposes for not following the practices do violate other’s rights.

If a bank chooses to just follow the practices and not impose the penalties, there isn’t anything wrong with that. If it had any other name, we wouldn’t recognize it. It is the penalties within Sharia that make it incomparable with a free society.

It is not sharia law that is being forced on anyone yet. These are business practices.

The penalties within Sharia law that violate other's rights are already illegal and incompatible with a free society. You can't, however, outlaw all the practices of Sharia because most of those are personal freedoms (fasting, ritual washing, dietary, etc)

IE, it is already illegal to practice full Sharia law, with all its practices and penalties.

You’re trying to make a comparison between Mormonism and Islam? Wow. Just wow.

So it is OK, because it is not being forced YET. The idea is to try and stop it before it gets there.

Fasting and washing are not part of the LAWS of sharia. Making sharia law illegal needs to be done to send them a messgae.

But it does not have any other name and it needs to be recognized. Their plan is to destroy us from within and this is just a small step forward.

Where do you draw the line in using the power of the state to discriminate against a religion? Is there a clearly defined point that says this one practice is OK and this is not?

Mine is convincing a jury that actions of an individual, a group, a corporation caused me harm.

Shariah law and Constitutional law cannot coexist. The country cannot function under a smorgasbord of laws, especially laws that originate from totalitarian or monarchical societies, and maintain the principles of individual rights and equal justice. The end game of these 'liberal thinkers' is the destruction of Constitutional government. Because of people like Mr. Boy, it does have to be explained on a conservative website.

Allowing freedom of religion for Islam will be to discriminate against other religions. You are standing up for an ideology that has NO concerns for the beliefs of anyone else.

Islam is not OK, look around the world.

Fasting and washing are not part of the LAWS of sharia.

Actually, they are. Sharia law has seven major areas:
