Mostly true in the "continental" or global view. But locally the wind can come from any direction. It often comes in from the coast (Atlantic Ocean) or from the south in the Delmarva region. I know, I live in the area. And sometimes there is no wind at all.

I understand you there but I haven't heard anything to suggest the shipping hold or shipping containers were radiation shielded.

Any physicists around here would be better at opining than me but given the limited exposure of the pirates to the substance and the acuteness of the negative effects it had upon them, The hold or containers would have needed substantial shielding to keep the crew from cooking and to keep nuclear detectors from going offscale miles away.

Not really, it depends on what the radiation type is. To me it acts like a beta emitter. Beta radiation will not pass through the steel walls of the hold and could not be sensed remotely. It explains why the crew suffered no ill effects. It is also probably not an alpha emitter, because alpha radiation will not travel but a few inches in air. For the pirates to become sick from alpha radiation, they would have to ingest the powder. It explains why no one was injured until the hold cover was opened and they looked inside. Beta will travel several feet in air. These guys got a whole body dose form a very high energy source of beta radiation

If the radiation was a gamma emitter or a neutron source, several feet of lead would be needed to shield it.

Actually, there are some that think the mother of all oil fields is about 2 miles deep, in the Sodom and Gomorrah area. There are also some scripture verses that seem to indicate the Israel will one day “find” this oil. As far as why not years ago? I think it is so that didn’t get fat, lazy and self sufficient.
