My e-mail to Janet H. Brown, Executive Director of the Debate Commission:
SUBJECT: Gwen Ifill has a conflict of interest
Gwen Ifill, the proposed moderator for Thursdays debate, has a financial conflict of interest that will make it impossible to presume she does not favor one candidate over the other.
Ifills next book, Breakthrough: Politics and Race in the Age of Obama, is scheduled to be released on Inaugeration Day. It is obvious that she will profit financially from an Obama victory, since the timing of the release of this book will position her to sell a lot of books in the event that he wins. If Barack Obama loses the election, however, one can presume that her book on The Age of Obama will not sell as well on John McCains Inaugeration Day.
This goes beyond an appearance of conflict of interest, which must be avoided, to an actual, financial conflict of interest, which is completely unacceptable. At a minimum, Gwen Ifill should be required to disclose her conflict at the beginning and end of the debate session, with an explaination of why she will profit financially from an Obama victory.
We should all send an e-mail to Janet H. Brown, Executive Director of the Debates Commission at jb@debates.org
Remember to be respectful and to ask for a remedy, either the substitution of a moderator who does not have a conflict of interest or an on-camera disclosure by Ifill of the nature of her conflict of interest.
So, change your FReeper handle to "Aquarius"...
Hmm... trick question?
Should Gwen Ifill be allowed to moderate the Vice Presidential Debate?
Yes, she is too partisan & in the tank for Barack Obama
Maybe I haven’t had enough coffee yet, but it seems like that should be “NO, she is too partisan & in the tank for Barack Obama”
Jim Lehrer: "Well of course we are biased and lie on PBS.
Truth means NOTHING to us anymore, at PBS.
Our ony agenda is to sell Ms. Ifill's upcoming book on our chosen upcoming
President and Messiah, Obama."
That sure is a Stuck on Stupid poll. Whoever wrote it must have failed 3rd grade English.
Gee, ya think?!??? I can imagine questions to Biden along the lines of: “How does it feel being the running mate of a Saint?” To Palin: “Who do you think you are trying to deny a black man his rightful place in the White House?”
With the black racist support for Obama in this country (more than 90% of blacks refusing to support a white candidate), I think it is an absolute outrage that a black who has already announced her support for the black candidate is being allowed to “objectively” moderate this debate. May God surround Sarah with his protective arms when this racist demagogue cynically abuses the nation’s trust in. What an appalling set up!
This disclosure may be a last minute surprise that was planned by the McCain campaign to hit the debate committee. I’m not convinced they were caught off guard by this...at least yet. Whatever the case, I don’t remember a similar situation.
Ifill should step aside. This is not a case of whether Palin can deal with the adversity. It’s plain and simple conflict of interest that only distracts and feeds into the ongoing bias story.
Sorry I published the poll before my morning coffee. Fixed now.
ok. I’ll check it.
She won’t step aside as it is already too late to replace her. This all should have been found out by McCain’s team a long time ago and not just now. Then, there would have been a chance to get her replaced. It is only hours before the debate and the way things go, time is on the side of the dems.
Sarah Palin should refuse to attend the debate on Thursday unless Gwen Ifill is replaced.
The Friends have been all over this story all morning...they are getting bombarded with email that Gwen should be removed.
We have known on this board since September 11. I sent the item to a number of outlets then and it got no traction. I sent it to Michelle Malkin on Monday and she first wrote about it.
I think Ifill should be left in place as the moderator. Part of Palin’s appeal is that she is not a whiner and is though and self sufficient. So, to complain about Ifill would be spun as being a whiner. It's my guess that Ifill will be mindful that she may be perceived as being partisan and thereby “may” be more objective than she otherwise might be. We'll see...
She will be there as scheduled. The thing is set in concrete. It would also be a bad move for her to refuse since that would only give the MSM and dems more spin on her saying she is trying to get out of it because she isn’t ready.
