It is all really of no importance. George Romney marched on behalf of Dr King, and very likely with Dr King (credible eyewitnesses!). Mitt remembered the association, and his recollection, given 40+ years elapsed time, is substantially honest and accurate. Nitpickers who want to try to destroy Mitt over this, are getting carried away. The essential thing to me is that Mitt didn’t deliberately fabricate a tale about his dad and Dr. King; he’s not John Kerry in Cambodia. I prefer Fred, but if this is the worst thing you can come up with against Mitt, then he’s OK too.

Ultimately each of us gets to decide whether we think this is important or not. I personally can’t give Romney the benefit of the doubt after his claim to be a lifelong hunter (and other discredited/slippery claims from him).

It comes down to this: if you believe Romney, the two random people who claimed to see George with MLK in Grosse Pointe, and three unsourced book accounts (one with major factual errors) written years or decades later — then you must necessarily believe that that contemporaneous news accounts were wrong, and they somehow omitted MLK’s presence, and the memory of one of the people who actually helped lead the Grosse Pointe march was wrong, and the accounts of the Grosse Pointe historical society are wrong, and the accounts of MLK historians are wrong.

When we hammered Gore for claiming to invent the Internet, or Kerry for all his lies, or Clinton for parsing the definition of “is,” democrats offered up the same defenses that we’re hearing now for Mitt. These are just minor little nits, they just misspoke, etc., etc. As I said, for me it’s Romney’s pattern of this, combined with his absolutely tortured handling of this. If it were really minor, then Romney himself would have just written it off as a fuzzy memory.

“Fred is the overwhelming choice of the Republican bloggers ( not just FR ), and he’s a very intelligent man. On all the issues that matter to me, immigration, global warming, taxes, defense, gun control, and social security, Fred has an intelligent and well-reasoned position.”

Exactly...we live in a era where the dems spout their rhetoric, and the only way we’ll stand is by facing them with reason.

Being like them is not an option. We can’t run to the MSM to help us, and spin our way around it. We need concise plans, and we need leaders whom will not only sign it, but make it possible.
