This irrational exuberant support of Paul smells like a Clinton, Inc. ruse to split the Republican primary. I can assure you, the Paul supporters in my neck of the woods would only vote R if the nominee promised to protect medical marijuana from the DEA raids.

>> How do you know its a large portion?
Anecdotal evidence only.
However - based on the Paul supporters I have encountered, read or viewed ... online (including here, DU and elsewhere), offline (via a few acquaintences who are Paul supporters), and those that I’ve seen on television - it seems a safe assumption that a large portion of Paul supporters are complete wackos.
Its only by my gracious optimistic nature that I didn’t substitute the word “all” for the phrase “a large portion of”.
When you’ve been endorsed by conspiracy-theorist extraordinaire Alex Jones, the 9-11 truthers, and those that think the moon landing was a hoax - it follows that many of your supporters will be entirely certifiable.
What frightens me more than the fact that Alex Jones supports Ron Paul, is that Paul himself does nothing to discredit the abject lunacy of the fringe conspiracy crowd and tinfoil hatters. He might get more traction if he’d actually distance himself from these people. Instead, he seems to welcome the support of people who are single-handedly relegating him to the dustbin of history.
Unfortunately, I cannot surmise whether Paul is begrudgingly accepting the support of the lunatic fringe only because they’re his largest base ... or whether he enthusiastically welcomes their support because he’s one of them.
I hope for the former ... I expect the latter is closer to the truth.

L.Ron’s head is so far up his ass, the recovery team is going to have to cut switchback roads just to get up there to reach it.

Agreed. A small government serves nobody if it results in national suicide.

The practical aspect of L.Ron, however, isn’t smaller government. It is simply changing the names and some functions of almost every department he promises to eliminate. The Federal Reserve would be replaced with the Federal Gold Reserve, the IRS would be replaced with the Sales Tax Enforcement Agency, the CIA would be replaced with the OSS, the NSA would be replaced with the Office of Signals and Signs, the Department of Education would be replaced with the Department of Educational Transitional Services (department that supposedly would transition the DOE to the States.) The War on Drugs would be replaced with The War on Rehab.

I forgot the biggest department under L.Ron- The Department of Silly Explanations.
Its sole purpose would be to follow L.Ron around and explain what he ‘really meant’ when he say something or describe the nuances of his actions that the rest of us are to dumb to understand.

For example, go over to MySpace or on a blog and say anything bad(true) about Ron Paul. You will instantly be castigated by dozens of commenter's.That's just horrible! I'm glad nothing like that ever happens on FR! As one of the few pro-Paul FReepers, I never encounter that kind of abuse here. /s

Why must the Republican Party nominate a 72-year-old grandfather from the Gulf Coast of Texas, until the past few months little known outside his district, as its 2008 standard-bearer? Very simple: the alternative is eight years of President Hillary Clinton. Come-quick-and-see-the-mental-patients-frothing-at-the-mouth-again PING! ;)

The point was you have a lot of kids acting like this is American Idol voting.
I guess the good thing is they are at least involved and have exposure to a ‘somewhat’ Conservative message. If anything, it will do more to cause them to doubt the Liberal view on anything.
The bad part is, they are exposed to all this CFR/Neo-Con Conspiracy BS.

If Rudy wins the nomination I believe he will attract enough mainstream, reasoned voters to carry the day. Those who refuse to vote for a candidate because he fails some specific litmus test are more likely to deliver the election to the opposition, IMO.
But I am amused by the level of libertarian derangment syndrome displayed by many posters here.

My brother drove us by Haight Ashbury last month when I visted N. California.
Here is a pic of a stenchhippie I took on Haight street. Would it be a stretch to say he is a Ron Paul fan, assuming he had a pulse?
