Come along with me if you will, to a time long ago. Well, actually just a few months ago. But apparently, it was seemingly a more innocent age:
On the July 27, 2006 edition of MSNBC's Hardball, host Chris Matthews asked Ann Coulter, "How do you know that [former President] Bill Clinton is gay?" -- referring to her comment the night before on CNBC's The Big Idea with Donny Deutsch that Clinton "show[s] some level of latent homosexuality."
Coulter responded, "I don't know if he's gay. But [former Vice President] Al Gore -- total fag."
She went on to defend her theory about Clinton's sexuality by stating that "everyone has always known, widely promiscuous heterosexual men have, as I say, a whiff of the bathhouse about them."
Coulter claimed she was "just kidding" about Gore, but said of her theory about Clinton, "It's not only not a joke, it's not even surprising."
As the world now knows, Ann Coulter made a similar joke at CPAC a couple of days ago. But this time our watchdog media were looking for dirt from CPAC, so they latched upon her joke, and pretended she was calling Edwards a faggot -- and of course indulging in hate speech.
But where was their outrage last July?
Where was outrage here at Free Republic?
(I believe some of the members of the audience were even Freepers.)
How time flies.
But please remember to be outraged.
A "selective outrage" ping.
So...what's your point?
That being said, I wouldn't go to Ann for anything but an occasional humor break. She's good at that. But certainly not anything that involves serious conservative political opinion.....
I knew I was being too subtle.
Back in July Coulter's appearance and jokes on Hardball were celebrated quite boisterously around here.
Now she is being condemned by many here for her very CPAC joke.
What is the difference? What has changed?
"If you can't see the difference between Hardball and CPAC, you are beyond help."
I guess there is a big difference. Hardball has an audience of millions. CPAC had an audience of about 100 in the room and another 10,000 watching C-SPAN.
Good point. Thanks!
Judging by yesterday's multitudes of posts by Sam Hill, one is "stupid" if one disagrees with what Ann said at CPAC.
we love Ann and everything she says. You go girl!
The point is, is that the scumbags in the MSM and Rat party are trying to make CPAC look like a bunch of heathens with guilt-by-association tactics.
Had Ann said this in a random conversation with someone it wouldn't have made the news.
Please not that this has been hidden away in "bloggers and personals."
We wouldn't want to step on the two dozen Coulter bashing threads would we?
Please note that those threads are also "blog" sourced or even personal vanities. Some of them are even re-posts of blog-sourced articles.
Again, what is the difference?
Is this an official announcement that defending Coulter (who helped make this site) is no longer to be permitted?
So she said BJ Clinton was light hearted and happy.
Of course some people want to use the corrupted meaning of gay.
She called the global warming idiot a cigarette, which is funny because the type that believe in man made global warming would consider smoking a fag to add to global warming.
Way to go, Ann!! Freep 'em if they can't take a joke.
Because you guys just don't get it. You keep falling for this like Charlie Brown trying to kick Lucy's football. Besides, Ann didn't even call Edwards a faggot directly, her interpretation is that if she did, she'd be penalized by the thought police.
Conservatives keep fighting by British gentlemanly debating rules, we're going to keep losing battles to the Left.
What's worse, however, is that unlike a solo appearance on Hardball, she did it in a venue which will allow the Left to tar conservatives as bigots.
That's what's different.
One more way it is different: a lot of us have caught on to her schtick, and it's not that funny anymore.
Have you read her books? She is excellent at serious conservative poltiical opinion. She just peppers in some humor to make it more fun.
"What has changed is that she is not joking about someone who has been caught in an adulterous relationship in the Oval Office, but rather a presidential candidate who, although someone I find repellant politically, is pretty much a family man. In addition, her "joke" used a socially unacceptable epithet."
Huh? She called Gore a fag. That is short for "faggot."
Did you look at the clip?
Gore is a family man, too.
They were both JOKES.
Sheesh.
