The answer was ONLY belligerent if one defines belligerent as "giving an answer the questioner does not like".
"Go to hell." would be a belligerent answer.
"Give me a flipping break." would be belligerent.
"Your house - Your wife called me." would be belligerent.
"I don't care to discuss my private life.", where legally correct, certainly is NOT belligerent.
Also - Consider that the kid gave a direct answer to the question "Have you been drinking?" This is, supposedly, the question which the roadblock was all about. The rest of the kid's conversation, regardless of the fact the cop didn't like the answers he heard, is sufficient to establish the kid was not under the influence (assuming he was not).
I assume you always have your own traveling papers in order, though.
There is absolutely nothing belligerent about respectfully declining to discuss one's personal business. Nothing whatsoever, in fact it's simply none of the cop's business.
In your view :)
I do agree, belligerent is a very subjective word.
I have no reason to think this child was anything but belligerent. First of all, he had no reason to not just answer the question. Second, this little snert took a camera with him - he planned to cause a stir from the beginning. Because of that, although his voice sounds calm, his body language could be telling a vastly different story. (Body language is more important than tone of voice in face to face communication.)
If I was this kid's mom, I'd ground him for a month and make him apologize to the cops for being a moron.
True none the less.
Oh puhleeze. Only a moron would try to compare answering the question "where are you headed" to a body cavity search. You're as immature as the child who pulled this stunt.
I would agree with this except for the implied thought that having someone check your cops out on occasion is a bad thing. Personally, I think more of us should be doing this and doing it more often. This cop was wrong and I am very happy to see that it was caught on tape.
You're just pissed off because you don't like the idea of challenging some perceived authority, which I might add is a very, VERY American thing to do.
If I ran across a belligerent little snot while I was just trying to do my job, I'd probably get a bit combative myself.
I would say the same of some who are claiming the cops should have remained calm, all the while expressing belligerence in their posts. ;)
I'm glad you didn't say I wanted the police to club him or slap him. . .since I didn't say that. ;)
If I was this kid's father, I'd still be slapping him on the back and telling him how proud of him I am. Belligerent is not subjective, it has a definition that certainly does not match either the delivery of his words, nor the content. Now your making up body language as a last ditch effort. What was he doing, sticking his tongue out, thumbing his nose??? Please, body language, that is just so weak.
Ad hominem attacks are always a sign that someone has reached the acme of their intellect. Although anybody who would object to a cavity search must be hiding something, are you a drug mule??? Got a few condoms up there??? Sounds suspicious to me, more than enough probable cause.
Please stop referring to the kid this way.
You don't know him and you only know what we've all read from the same news story. To continue to call him names like this with the evidence you have, speaks more about your own personality and attitude than it does anyone else. Personally, I only wish we had more kids like this across the country and Democrats wouldn't be running Congress right now.
This kid has cajones to face the authorities down like he did and the self control to do it right. You just gotta respect that..... unless of course you are yourself one of those belligerent jack booted thugs who's in law enforcement for the wrong reasons and you're upset that your own perceived authority might not be as all powerful as your ego likes to believe.
Obviously, the child was belligerent. I would agree, the cop became belligerent in response to the child's behavior.
The child clearly showed he was waging war against the cops when he set this whole thing up with his little video camera.
Thanks for posting that definition. Now, maybe those who are saying the child wasn't belligerent will be humble enough to admit they were wrong. (I won't hold my breath.)
I know he intentionally brought his little video camera so he could stir things up. That's belligerence. And in my book, that makes him a little snot.
Personally, I only wish we had more kids like this across the country and Democrats wouldn't be running Congress right now.
More kids craving attention? More kids wanting to play the victim? More kids wanting to give a hard time to guys who are just trying to do their jobs?
You can have 'em.
This kid has cajones to face the authorities down like he did and the self control to do it right.
So any teen boy who acts belligerent before a parent has 'cajones' too? I mean, they're authorities as well, right?
You just gotta respect that
I don't respect this little snot one bit.
The young man quietly and politely defended his own rights. You some kind of bootlicker?
LOL, can't quite figure out if you're joking or delusional.
Since when is it belligerent to decline to discuss your personal life?
I sure do. What right do cops have violatingthe law, and falsely imprisoning this kid?
These cops deserve to permanently lose their badge, and this kid deserves a modest payout for the harrassment and false imprisonment he suffered through.
I made a generic characterization and never called you any name. Seems you are telling me you believe that characterization fits you to a T. Based on the your post, you seem to be corret.
Although anybody who would object to a cavity search must be hiding something, are you a drug mule???
Please copy and paste where I said I would or would not submit to a cavity search. Oh, that's right, you can't - I never said any such thing.
"The child clearly showed he was waging war against the cops when he set this whole thing up with his little video camera."
Hmmmm, waging war, now that's funny. I guess the african-americans during the 60's were waging war too, although it looked kinda funny as they were the ones getting blasted with water cannons, beat with nightsticks, and having german sheppards let loose on them.
