There's another story today. They're preparing everyone for the end. I don't understand why I feel so very bad about this, but I really do.

Laminitis has always been one of the major concerns.

It's probably because we all saw it. We were all rooting for that horse, and then, in a flash...everything was gone..and we witnessed it.

I usually don't like watching horse racing. A couple years ago at a track in the NY area, a gorgeous grey horse threw it's rider and impaled itself on something at the side of the track. It's screams were awful. And they played it over and over on the news.

I know almost nothing about horses or racing.I do know that horses trend to fare very badly when they break a leg.I also know that prize race horses can bring big $$$ in stud fees.
Do the efforts to save this horse have anything to do with stud fees?
To: DJ MacWoW
Those of us who witnessed it will never forget Ruffian. That was one of the most depressing days I remember from my childhood.

Most definitely. Barbaro's sire, Dynaformer, stands for $100,000 a live foal. Since Barbaro is well bred and won the Kentucky Derby, he would stand for at least that number.
70 to 100 foals a year. Lots of money involved here.

The horse was Ruffian? I just remembered the incident and haven't liked horse racing since. Btw, no, I don't think it should be banned or something. Accidents happen. It was just heartbreaking to see. (old softie female here lol)

Not a horse person but my impression is that it has everything to do with it.
Not that I have a problem saving a horse so all it can do is ... well . .

No, Ruffian broke down on national t.v. in the 70s. I think you're talking about a juvenile filly before the Breeders Cup in 2001. Can't remember her name.

OK...if my belief about the prognosis of a horse with a broken leg is correct *and* if you know what you're talking about here (your screen name suggests to me that you do),then it seems to me that they're subjecting this animal to senseless pain simply to make a dollar?
I'm no "animal rights activist",but I think this is wrong.
To: gate2wire
Yes, and it wasn't a normal race, it was a two horse race between Ruffian and Foolish Pleasure, it was meant to be the "Billie Jean King vs Bobby Riggs" of Horse Racing.

Getting worse.By my read, the vet is effectively saying "he's not going to make it."
