But, unlike those other lawyers, Harriet Miers is friends with George Bush, who obviously values friendship and loyalty more than finding the best person for the job.

It only took till the 2nd paragraph to establish a false premise.

I'm not sure why you continue this campaign.

Yep - if GWB really honored loyalty, he would have been loyal to the base that got him where he is today.

I took time away today. Plowed up the garden. Raked some leaves. I tried to think why W picked Harriet for this important position. I tried to be fair to the pro-Miers crowd and their arguments. I considered his track record on nominations.

His picks for cabinet and appellate court positions have been stellar. While Roberts is and unknown, he is well known as a top notch appellate litigator before the Court, consistently taking conservative positions.

But his pick makes absolutely no sense.

It accomplishes nothing.

It ticks off a sizeable chunk of his base.

It makes him look weak and ineffectual to the Dems.

It doesn't even break new ground like picking JRB or Garza would have accomplished.

It's just a dud. They know it's a dud. And any attempt to say otherwise is just an exercise in wishful thinking.

I love W and think he's great. I'd send my only son into battle under his command. But when something stinks, it stinks. And this nomination....stinks. Sorry, Miers crowd. I love you. I really did my best to find a way to support her but couldn't do it.

That being said, she doesn't even come close to being the most qualified candidate.

Wrong, the most qualified candidate is the candidate the POTUS decides can be most depended upon to adhere to his judicial philosophy in the nominating process.

In the confirmation process, the most qualified candidate is the conservative candidate who can get 50 votes.

Because counterpunch is speaking for a large number of totally disaffected conservatives who agree with his viewpoint, and appreciate his efforts to not just "let this slide" for the sake of some false party harmony.

GWB doesn't value anything but his corporate cronies! Look at New Orleans, LA during the supposed organization that FEMA was doing there. What a tragedy! Everything this man does is bad!

LOL, a left wing lunatic cheering on the bash Bush and Miers wing of the conservative movement.

Gotta love it.

Why??? That is the paramount question. Even though Bush is now a lame duck president, it seems as if he would want as much base support as possible for the next three years.

What could have been in his mind to anger so many people? Was he totally unaware of the consequences, or if he knew it, did he just not care?

OK, I'm convinced. From now on I support Pat Buchanan for the Supremes...

glad you're here. Stick around a while and you'll learn a few things. Object, debate, follow the rules, don't be incendiary and a large percent will welcome crossing swords with you. As for NO, it looks like a 90% reduction in the expected number of deaths will be FEMA and Brownie's legacy considering the magnitude of the natural disaster.

Well, you totally disaffected conservatives need to just have a great big group hug. Be sure to give Pat Buchanan and Biill Krystol a nice squeeze on the buns to make it complete.

As far as I'm concerned, all that's needed to be said has been said until such time as the hearings begin or new evidence comes out.

The non-stop barrage from the disaffecteds who say nothing new at all is absurd at this point.

Or a member here who signed up with a troll account tomake it look that way.

Your post highlights the attitude of many of the "just trush Bush" crowd. Attack those who bring up valid criticism, hurl insults, and suggest that the discussion itself is the problem here.

Why be freeping at all on the subject?

DG didn't say "trust Bush." He said basically, wait until we have some actual information.

That isn't about trust. It's about reason. Something sorely lacking from most of Miers' opponents to date.

Or should we chime in and call her a Church Lady to make you happy?

And spouting the cronyism talking point so prevalent among those opposed to Miers.

yep. Like I said, simple to do, and it's a tactic I've come to expect from the same crowd who has taken to calling those who dare question this pick "elitists" or "sexists".

Heck, they've taken up so many tricks from the liberal playbook in the past week, why not add one more?

It's a valid discussion point that nothing new has been raised in several days about this nominee. If you want to keep beating around the same points, fine, but I'm just as free to point out that you're having some sort of disaffected conservative orgy without bringing up anything new.

Trush Bush, indeed.
