i was a latin american studies major so i have more of a desire for international travel, but xshub doesn't. he and i went to Costa Rica about 8-9 yrs ago bc he had a work conference there. i really enjoyed it and always thought of Costa Rica as very safe, but another freeper told me recently that a friend of their's was murdered in Costa Rica, so there ya go. Hawaii is gorgeous and you will love it, we have taken the kids there several times. This summer is Kiawah Island SC and Colorado for our summer vacas.

I would liken this to an 18 yr old being killed in a car wreck by a criminally negligent drunk driver, and some writer asking if the parents were not somehow responsible by letting the 18 yr old 'run off' in a car unsupervised. What a supreme ass this guy is.

I do hope to someday go to Egypt but seriously we will need a whole new world order for that : )

Our good neighbors are Egyptian and we have dinner with them every now and then and I even love the food. Her decor in her house is to die for. Husband goes to Egypt now from Nov. to April due to the cold. He had a heart attack a few years back and he is near Alexandria (sp) I would love to go. He told us about this cruise that takes you to all the important ports...how I would love that. So unless I go with him its pretty much not going to happen anytime soon : (.

Rumor has it that her stepson told the family the dangers of aruba and C&C before they allowed her to go on the trip UNCHAPERONED.

I won't blame her tho, and I certainly dont blame the Dad, again this is rumor but its been said he did not want her to go.

Looking back, we all wish we hadn't made some decision that affected ours and others lives, and Lord knows we kick ourselves and wish we could change things, but we cant. Eventually I am sure this mother and father will regret things but it wont change the outcome.

I'm with you -- this is no time to rub salt in her wounds. It is too easy to blame the mother. And very hard for me to find fault with her for being perturbed!! I for one will NEVER go to Aruba. What a dump. I have never seen such an inept NON-pursuit of justice! Such stone-walling. Of course she is upset. And regardless of any of the victims being responsible, you do not get to murder people.

She allowed her barely eighteen year-old daughter to celebrate her high school graduation, by taking a trip to an island renowned for its casinos, bars and its "What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas" morality.

Natalie was an adult. She didn't need mom's permission to go.

Robert Paul Reyes is a total bonehead. This guy should drop the keyboard and find a new occupation.

There was some discussion on the O'Reilly show that there was inadequate chaperoning, that parents ought not have let their children go, etc. -- hindsight is 20/20, yes.

In this situation it is foolish to blame the mom or the chaperone. For grade schoolers it might be an honest question but in this case it's far off the mark. Let's stick the blame where it belongs, on the perp who did it.

If Natalee's parent(s) made a bad judgement call in allowing her to go to Aruba, then every parent who has done something similar made a mistake. And maybe it IS a
mistake!...even if most return home safely. Sadly we live in a different kind of world than that of my childhood and teen years. It wasn't sinless but I'll take it over what I witness today. Today's parents have to educate their young children to be aware of dangers I never even HEARD of as a kid! The reports of missing adults and child-snatching have become almost daily reports. This country has to be fixed! It is insane.

Talking about parents warning their children about strangers, did you hear what the little 11 year old boy who was lost in the mountains (Utah?) while camping with his family said? He was lost for 4 days but on the 2nd or 3 rd day he hid from some people who were searching for him because he was not supposed to talk to strangers and he was afraid of them. That is distressing that an 11 year old lost child would do that. The common sense had been scared out of him.

This is interesting. I have an 11 year old daughter, and shortly after the disappearance, we had a conversation about this. I tried to make her understand that, while NO ONE deserves to be kidnapped, drugged, raped or murdered, or whatever turns out to be the facts in the end, this young girl's actions are every parents nightmare.

If reports are true, this girl was drinking, partying like there was no tomorrow, and got into a car with strangers in a place she didn't know. Especially in a foreign country, laws are different and your rights there are not always the same. She made all the wrong choices.

There comes a time when you have to let your kids go off on their own, but before that time comes, you have to have laid the foundations well, and that includes personal responsibility. If you put yourself in danger, chances are you will get hurt.

/rant off.

That little boy in Utah was mentally challenged. I think, given the state of the world today, his parents probably did the right thing in teaching him. It is unfortunate that circumstances conspired as they did.

I didn't hear that. It would explain his actions but why would his parents let him go off with another child?

I don't remember all the details, but I think he was on a supervised camping trip, and its pretty standard that they use the "buddy" system, but as we all know, with kids, "stuff" happens. I am just grateful things turned out as they did. We need more happy endings.

Yes, I heard about it, Ditter. Wonder what an updated message to kids should be. "Only talk to SAFE strangers!"
What to do!!

This is really kind of disgusting. He is calling for people to pile on this woman.

Actually I think he posts here - under a BUNCH of different screennames! I have heard the same sentiment dozens of times here. How come that 18 year old went to the Carribean on vacations. What a slut! Her mom must be a slut too! Look she's divorced I knew it!

It never fails to amaze me, though the attacks on Elizabeth Smart and her family were REALLY over the top. Elizabeth was a slut you know?!?! Her Father was gay you know?!?!? She went along willingly you know?!?!?!
