Hatch was born on 22 March 1934. That makes him 71 years old. We need a two decades at least appointment.
If the appointment is going to be based purely upon longevity, then the President would have go with someone like Roberts, Pryor, or McConnell.
As infuriating as this may be, I doubt that the louses on the Dem. side of the aisle will allow any conservative African-American or female jurist to be appointed an Associate Justice on the Supreme Court.
I'm almost certain that they won't allow any Hispanic-even if Bush were willing, purely theoretically, to entertain the idea of choosing disgraced former HUD Secretary Henry Cisneros-on the bench.
Short of exhuming and reviving the corpse of Justice Cardozo, I just can't envision such a scenario occurring.
Right now, McConnell seems like the best overall selection, based upon a number of requirements, e.g. proper judicial comportment, character, textualist views, and most importantly-from my perspective, at least-the ability to withstand the scrutiny of ferocious, radical leftist invective, both in the media spotlight and on Capitol Hill, when he finally does go through the wringer.
If I were in President Bush's position, I would spend weeks-perhaps months-circulating rumors on Capitol Hill that someone like Lino Graglia-just to pick one example of their worst nightmare-were going to be sent to the Senate.
Then, I'd sock them with McConnell or Roberts.
>>Garza is the favorite, which means he's the likely pick<<
It's WAAAAAAAYYYYYYY too early for any prediction here. There's just not enough quality information out yet, and the people in the know (assuming there are any, well, at least more than 1) aren't talking. Tradesports accuracy comes from examples where there is MUCH, MUCH more information out than there is now.
Not dumping on the idea. In 2-3 weeks, this could be a useful analysis, but right now, I'd take anything with a grain of salt, if that.
