Run 6 Status: Feb 23, 2009

Run 6 of CFFA cards is sold out. I have no plans to produce any more CFFA’s of this design. In a few weeks I will take a look at some of the units that never worked and see if I can repair them. If I can fix them I will throw them up on Ebay.

Future CFFA Projects:

I am currently looking at designing a new CFFA type card with some important new features. I think the most useful feature would be dual Floppy disk drive emulation. This would allow a new CFFA card to handle both ProDOS and any other OS that can run from the floppy drives, like DOS 3.3. This would also include protected games as long as a nibblized image could be made.

I am looking to gauge interest in such a product. If you think you would be interested in purchasing an advanced CFFA type card with floppy emulation and a couple of other goodies, please let me know. I got this the other day, 50 or 75 per cent off (one of the local Office Depot locations, closing clearance sale), and tried it on the mid-90s PowerMac 7600, mouse only. The mouse is what I've been using, a $10 Micro Innovations laser mouse, two buttons and wheel, but on a PS/2 to ADB adapter. Anyway, plugged the mouse into this Belkin USB to PS/2 Adapter, plugged that into the end of the USB keyboard, and it worked immediately, no drivers or anything (there aren't any available). The only inconvenience is that the right button doesn't bring up the contextual menu, I have to shift-click, or (the original Mac method) click and wait. Haven't tried the keyboard side yet, may do that today. When I get ambitious (ie, don't hold your breath) I plan to shut down, pull off the lid, and install this 3+1 Port FireWire PCI Card that I picked up for cheap on the clearance when Circuit City closed.

The site page sez it works under "OS 10.5 running Parallels 3.5 with Windows XP" and suggests it should work under other configurations. It was rolled out at least six years ago (!) apparently by Pixela, and the price hasn't budged from the $119 they were charging in 2003.

Status: Jan 1, 2010: HD and Floppy images running from USB flash drives

The CFFA3000 can now boot, read, and write from HD and floppy image files stored on common USB flash drives. The flash drive can be formatted FAT16 or FAT32. Currently .PO and .NIB files are supported. There is still a great deal of supporting code to be written and tested and some flash drives don't work so they will need to be debugged. Also a second prototype will be needed to correct a few bugs and add a couple small features.

Great tool for CFFA users:
All CFFA owners who use Windows... Andy McFadden has come out with an excellent tool called: CiderPress. This tool will allow you to read and write your CFFA formatted CF cards right on your PC. It will make an excellent backup tool. Check it out at Andy's Site

Information about the "3 jumper" fix for older CFFA V1.2 cards: (Runs 1, 2, and 3) A problem as been found that explains why many CompactFlash cards have never worked with the older CFFA cards. I was motivated to find this problem when I realized that SanDisk 256MB cards were not working properly. To summarize, the address lines were changing near the end of the ATA bus cycle seen by the CF card. This seemed to be tolerated by the smaller SanDisk cards, but not the 256MB card or many other brands, like Lexar. So after much debugging I found the problem and was able to fix the problem with a new release of the CPLD logic (V1.4), and the addition of 3 "rework" jumper wires to the board.
