Remote Desktop is the way to go...if XPHome doesn't come with it, you can download it for free from Microsoft.com...

Not a problem. If you'll post the model of your router I can look it up for you in about 5 seconds.

Remote Desktop doesn't do what he's looking for. Remote Desktop allows you to login to a COMPUTER remotely and view the screen as if you were sitting on it, like you've dragged your monitor and keyboard along with you. He wants to connect an additional remote computer to an existing network via the Internet. Completely different technology involved with that.

Besides, I don't like having a Remote Desktop-enabled Windows machine facing the Internet. One wrong worm and every slezoid on the planet will be browsing your personal files and proxying through your network connection. Since VPN typically connects to the router and not a PC, you're far less vulnerable to worms and viruses.

It's a Linksys BEFSR41, it has PPTP and IPSec capabilities. I'm working on the correct port forwarding and port triggering right now.

WinXP Pro and Remote Desktop behind a fair Router / Firewall works well and is pretty secure. It's about as secure an option as a novice can get.

Also, you can transfer files as well... It's just best not to try to transfer large files over a dial-up connection. You can copy, switch back to the local machine, and then paste the files.

It's much more versatile and secure (behind a router / firewall) than most people realize.
