It's not even true. The last two credit cards I applied for, they asked me for a SS number. I refused to give it to them. In both cases, the company simply said "OK" and gave me the card anyway.

We have the aptly named SIN card in Canada, and you don't have to offer the number to anyone but your employer, or your bank if you want an RRSP or RESP. I had to get SIN #'s for my kids RESP.

The whole 'number' thing won't bother me too much until they try to put my number in or on me.

Pay into SS all those years, die the day after you retire and the gov't gives you a puny couple hundred books. What kind of books does the government give you? And why do you care anyway? You won't be doing much reading at that point.

Allright, allright! I got it - gubmn't gives ya couple hundred bucks. Big deal.... I still think every gov't employee should be in the system, senators, congressman.....all of em!

The $255 "death benefit" is payable only to a spouse who was living with the beneficiary at the time of death; a spouse not living with the beneficiary if that spouse was receiving SS benefits based on the deceased's work record; a child (or children) who is eligible for benefits on the deceased's work record. The undertaker can't claim it.
