I think Congress was opposed to Utah becoming a state due to the bigamy issues.
As to whether there was a fear that the rest of the states would have to recognize polygamous marriages, I just don't know.
The SCOTUS hasn't taken much interest in divorce cases in many years, so for the most part the most powerful arguments are from state courts these days.
I think it's completely unheard of for Congress to take an interest in marriage, much less elevate it to constitutional status.

There is an issue you aren't considering, and that is that Full Faith and Credit clause applies to judgments, not contracts.
For the most part, the Full Faith and Credit cases vis-a-vis domestic relations have to do with divorce, not marriage.
Remember the old days when people would go to Reno to get a divorce? That was the hey day of Supreme Court involvement in domestic relations.

There is an issue you aren't considering, and that is that Full Faith and Credit clause applies to judgments, not contracts. Yes. If a contract from one state is going to be enforced in another, there can be a public policy against it. But a judgment in one state is a judment everywhere. (Although I think Nevada casinos do have problems with their gambling judgments in some states. Probably a Supreme Court case waiting to be born some day.)
For the most part, the Full Faith and Credit cases vis-a-vis domestic relations have to do with divorce, not marriage.
Yes. Those pesky alimony judgments. Enforceable everywhere. Full Faith and Credit.
Remember the old days when people would go to Reno to get a divorce? That was the hey day of Supreme Court involvement in domestic relations.
Yes. And once divorced in Nevada, they were legally divorced everywhere. Even in states that would never have granted them a divorce. Again, this is a status-creating law. It's the ol' Dred Scot issue (broadly speaking). Some states will create (or terminate) a status that other states find repugnant. But I think FF&C controls. And -- now that you bring it up -- the Reno divorce is an excellent analogy to the gay marriage in Hawaii or someplace that may allow it.
