I think he was just having a little fun by noting that he played Grant. No one seriously thinks that would, or should, hurt him in the South.

Some here obviously hope that it *does* hurt Thompson in the South. How lame is that?

I can’t imagine it would hurt him here......he is quite popular down here.

and acting out Grant doesn’t matter much down here.....most Southerners under 40 don’t pay much attention to any history

What a bunch of bunk. It was an acting job. Only a total idiot would believe Fred Thompson is the person he played, no matter what part it was, in any film or TV shows.

Duh. It amazes me how it's lost on so many Freepers that it was just a joke.

course since their families probably owned slaves they had it coming /s

No, it was the fact that Pemberton chose to hole his army up in a city with a civilian population that caused it. Had Pemberton not done that there would have been no seige.

Also FWIW, I knew him to be a senator before I knew him to be an actor.

I have a much higher opinion of Duncan Hunter when I ignore his supporters! lol

Wiki said that Groucho would accept the answer of six. It also said he would accept the answer of “Grant” for the other question because they were actually consolation questions to make sure that the guest got to go home with something.

When I think of Groucho, I think of Mark Levin for some reason. Not sure why.

And the Brits conducted the so-called carpet bombing because, contrary to popular legend, the Norton Bombsight couldn’t put a bomb in a pickle barrel at 20,000 feet. At least it couldn’t at night, and they conducted their raids at night to protect the crews.

I get sick and tired of people attacking the allies tactics at this late date when we didn’t ask for that damn war, we didn’t start it, we just finished it.

Take the atomic bombings. Those bombs saved four million Japanese lives. People always point to the million of ours it saved from being lost in an invasion. I would submit we would have had to kill 4X the number of japs to get the job done so it was for their benefit too.

War is like in infected tooth. There’s no easier softer way, you just have to get in there and yank it.

At a minimum, 4X the number. And that was if everything went perfectly. I think the more likely numbers were somewhere in the range 2 million allied casualties and tens of millions of japanese casualties. Given that they were intending to fight to the last man, woman, and child it's not inconceivable to think that an invasion of Japan could've ended their civilization.

nope it was NOT "indiscriminate".

what sherman ordered was a WAR CRIME, a CRIME AGAINST PEACE & a CRIME AGAINST HUMANITY.

" sherman the destroyer" should have been hanged.

and they did NOT do as they were "told". (Texans are NOT known for "following orders". it's part of our rebellious heritage.)

when the band arrived in DC,they were waving the flags. they were ordered NOT to march with the CSA flags, however.

damn NS.....Grant had no free will eh?

Pemberton (Yankee) made him bomb civilians....I get it.

Pemberton sucked though....you’re right about that.....but to be fair, it was reasonable to assume that he (Pemberton) could deal with gunboat traffic, defend to the east and not have to worry about the South and North land approaches which are horrible...impossible to the north.. to march an army through. He underestimated Grant’s ability to march down the Louisiana side and then cross over and take Jackson and Champion’s Hill etc thus making any hook up with Johnston impractical.

Which means it was Johnston’s fault as much since he did not make the effort necessary to match Grant and WT.

And yes...Grant did allow civilians to leave......those that wanted to but the ones who stayed were naive enough to think he would only target CSA encampments on the perimeter.

"sherman, the destroyer" probably killed nobody, personally.

what he SHOULD have been hanged for was "suffered troops under his command" to commit mass rapes, tortures, assaults, robberies, arson & MURDERS of countless civilians. in other words, sherman failed to END the commission of WAR CRIMES & CRIMES AGAINST HUMANITY, while the commanding general of those troops.

fwiw, that's what "general yamashita" was hanged for. sherman deserved a short rope & a long fall, TOO.
