Your summation is correct.

I work with a native born Syrian Muslim gentleman. He's basically a pacifist and argues that it is only a few "extremists" that are doing all the bad things over there.

My caution to him was that it is many more than just a "few."

One report I read estimated that maybe about 10% of the Muslim populations believe in extreme forms such as Wahhabism.

10% (and i believe the number is actually much higher) of more than a billion Muslims worldwide is 100 million extreme Islamofascists. That is a lot of dangerous people.

My Syrian co-worker commented that he knew only a couple of Muslims that felt this way. My admonishment to him was to not generalize personal experience to other societies and populations. What he may know through life experiences in Syria and Israel is almost certainly not true in Indonesia or Pakistan, for example.

That is why it is worthwhile to pay attention to what people are saying in regions where one is not.
You don't get a false picture that way.

Think I should come back over there to the FReepathon thread?

How's Texas doing, anyway?

Moved this to the Smoky Backroom already.
I posted it here on purpose. I'm a mod on another forum and had a feeling this is where it would be.

I oppose Islam on religious grounds. Based on all that I have read, Islam denies the Deity of Christ. I oppose Islam because of that (and other) false teachings.

I publically proclaim the Deity of Christ. Does that make me a bigot? 'Pod.

****************

I don't think that makes you a bigot. There is a huge difference between being opposed to a religion and hoping for the deaths of anyone who may practice it. There was no indication in the story that was posted yesterday that any of those who were injured or killed in the hotel collapse were terrorists, or were in any way involved in any kind of violence. I'm glad I saw that thread, because it made me think about this issue, and helped to crystalize my thoughts.

No Christian wants to see needless death.

My question was intended to crystallize others' thoughts.

I certainly do not wish all Muslims dead. Just the ones that want me dead and believe it is their solemn moral obligation to make that happen.

I lost a pretty good friend on 9-11. He burned to death in the basement of the Pentagon. This is a bit personal to me.

I'm very sorry for your loss. Although I didn't lose anyone on 9/11, that day remains in my thoughts, and I believe I understand why there are those whose hearts have somewhat hardened. To some degree, it is necessary. Yet this was an event that to me did not call for some of the callous responses that I saw on that (now-closed) thread.

I hope the Mods leave it out there, so that it may serve as a reminder of what we must guard against.

It's the Wahabbi version of Islam that is the problem.

For that statement to be true one must place an extremely narrow set of parameters on the word "problem".

Were the Israeli athletes in Munich assassinated by wahabbis?

Was the barracks in Lebanon bombed by wahabbis?

Were our men dragged through the streets of Somalia by wahabbis?

Was the plane over Lockerbie taken down by wahabbis?

Was Leon Klinghoffer tossed overboard by wahabbis?

Were our hostages in iran held by wahabbis?

Are Al-Aqsa, the PFLP-GC, islamic jihad, & hamas wahabbis?

Was the German discotheque bombed by wahabbis?

Was Sadat gunned down by wahabbis?

Was arafat a wahabbi?

Unless the answer to all these questions is yes, your comment might be a tiny bit disingenuous.

it's not disingenuous.

If you eliminate the Wahabbi teaching within Islam, you WILL thin the crowd out to the point that the rest of the extremists will stick out.

But Wahabbi or not, Islam or not, despots will be despots in that region.

You are very wrong if you think there is very little difference between Islam and Christianity.

anti-Islamic bigotry

Disagreeing with the false religion of Islam doesn't make one a bigot.

I was raised in a fundy Christian family and it parallels the Taliban to the point it ain't funny.

Could you give us some examples of how your Christian family was like the murderous Taliban? This sounds interesting.

the last thing I see in Europe right now is aryan supremecy in any form. The entire continent has seemed to acquiesce to the will of Muslim immigrants.

You are totally correct.

It is honestly amazing to me that the Middle East hasn't turned on itself.

as long as they have Israel to kick around and blame for their Palestinian problem, they will just keep doing what they are doing.

You are in a dream world. You'd have to weed out the whole Koran.
