Note that Lincoln, the father of the Income Tax, also died on April 15th.

The Civil War was Americans against the Confederates. The Southern Americans gave up their name when they fired on Fort Sumter.

It was the United States of American against the Confederate States of America. The Confederate states removed themselves from the union, not the continent.

Besides that, Southerners have a lot more right to the name American than a bunch of knob head communist yankees.

A Southerner wrote the Declaration of Independence. A Southerner wrote most of the Constitution and Bill of Rights.

If the South wasn't still part of the Union today, the northeast would be just another dictator ruled communist country with a wall along the border with the South to keep it's oppressed citizenry from fleeing to the Confederacy.

Where is secularism rooted? The northeast.

Where is same sex marriage legal? The northeast.

Where are most union thugs located? The northeast.

Where is the American Communist Party located? 235 West 23rd Street New York NY 10011

If anybody should quit calling themselves Americans, it's you damn yankees.

What a fun question! I am torn between being flippant and giving serious thought to your hypothetical question. If the official California Revolutionary Army bombed and occupied a US base located in California (read Fort Sumpter in SC).....well yes, I reckon I would send a few troops to toss some bombs. What would you do? Kumbaya??

There are many tyrants whose deaths are not celebrated.

Jeff Davis for one. I'd be hard pressed to remember the month that the old fart died in.

I never knew that Lincoln was shot and the Titanic sank on the same day (not year) until tonight on FR.

The two events were not connected.

The South is a cultural hell hole, and they can't cook worth a crap! However, Its people are much more friendlier that the big city dwellers of the North. The North had had more exposure to the outside world and tends to be more progressive. I hope you know that is broad brush generalization.

Sure. The yankee states wanted abortion on demand, legalized sodomy and demand legalized homosexual marriage, want to prohibit churches from preaching against homsexuality, etc. I hope you know that is broad brush generalization.

Forgive me, but I prefer to remain in a 'cultural hell hole' - absent French/Euopean morals. I''ll keep our churches, and I'll take southern fried chicken, cornbread, cream corn, sweet potatoes, butterpeas & green beans, over Yankee cuisine any day of the week ;o)

The great-great grandchild of the man who set Booth's cast when he broke his leg wanted him to be pardoned. I'm glad Reagan dismissed his proposal.

Actually Samuel Mudd was pardoned by Andrew Johnson in 1869 for his work during a yellow fever outbreak at his prison. What his family was hoping for was an overturning of his conviction and that he be declared innocent. I don't think that has been done.

Yes, as a matter of fact, I cracked open a bottle of Jack Daniel, and flew the Stars & Bars in honor of the occasion :)

In other words, no different than any other day. 8)

To me, if that is true, it would be against our constitution.

Thank God it wasn't true then.

Didn't FDR die on April 15, 80 years later?

No FDR died on April 12, which was the 84th anniversary of the day that the south started the war by bombarding Sumter. But that's for a different thread.

Anybody have an opinion on what would have happened if Lincoln had been assassinated while the war was still on?

The war WAS still on.

The South is a cultural hell hole, and they can't cook worth a crap!

John Rocker's description of northern culture:

"Imagine having to take the [Number] 7 train to the ballpark, looking like you're [riding through] Beirut next to some kid with purple hair next to some queer with AIDS right next to some dude who just got out of jail for the fourth time right next to some 20-year-old mom with four kids. It's depressing."

If the South is so bad why do you damnyankees keep flocking down here in droves.

I got an idea: STAY UP NORTH! We don't want you. Seriously.

Gorby had no means with which to coerce the republics.

Not true, his military was available at his order to mow down any opposition.

Lincoln had no mechanism with which to coerce the secessionis

Wrong again, he could have let them become independent as they wished, and as the original Federal arrangement intended. No killing and no destruction because of stubborned leader wishes to force his views. We could have had two or three viable major countries in N. America. It would have been very possible to get reunited at a later years or at least become close allies.

I intentionally had to say that to get a rise out of the knee jerk foaming at the mouth type. I succeeded!

John Rocker's description of northern culture...

Yeah, John Rocker's would be idea of an expert on culture. </sarcasm>

I got an idea: STAY UP NORTH! We don't want you. Seriously.

Seriously? No problem. Can't imagine any reason why I would want to move down there. But I'm all for sending down our crabby, whiney, befuddled, left-turn-signal-leaving-on, driving-30-in-a-50-zone senior citizens on down to bask in all that southern hospitality.

You are correct, and your description is fairly accurate. The liberal dominated big cities let their cities goes down the tube with too much tolerance of stupid behaviors. Rudy Juliani cleaned up that crazy city a lot, and he was regarded as the devil for cleaning the Time Square area from the porn and prostitution. When he returned the donation check to the Saudi prince after 9/11, he was reborn as a hero.

If the South is so bad why do you damnyankees keep flocking down here in droves.

Actually the Yankees don't come down to listen to the redneck drawls, or to eat the colard green, corn dog, and grits. They come down for the warm weather even if they have to deal with the close minded ignorant rednecks.

I got an idea: STAY UP NORTH! We don't want you. Seriously.

We who? You have been concurred, dude.

Gorby in theory had the military power to do whatever he wished. However, that power was not real insofar as it was in the process of collapse along with every other Soviet institution. The officers were unwilling to command atrocities and the troops were unwilling to commit them. A military that can theoretically coerce your opponents does no good if they won't follow your orders.

Whether the original Federal arrangement intended to allow for secession is what the entire argument is about. Your continuing to repeat that secession was legal does not make it so.

I think a far more likely scenario than several friendly countries in North America is permanent hostility among them, leading to arms races, cold wars and likely the occasional hot one.
