I'm just taking a guess, that the rabbi was the only military chaplain available that day. Sounds like he did a mitzvah (good deed) in acknowledging Jim's baptism.

Military Chaplain is my favorite hypothesis.
I met Jim decades ago and he was 100% Christian and so I’m sure that’s where he finished his race.
I was just curious about how the word “rabbi” got in there.
