I think Fran Tarkington went to about 4 Superbowls and never won....

Not in a row. Jim Kelly and the Buffalo Bills will forever have the distinction of going to - and losing - four Superbowls in a row. (I have family outside of Buffalo in DePew and Orchard Park. Boy were they beside themselves!)

What is it about turning 50 that the number of cases one experiences of CRS on a daily or weekly basis increases exponentially?

Geez, I'm afraid to put my truck keys down fearing I'll never find them again!!!!!

Heck, by tomorrow I'll probably have forgotten all about the Bears not going to the playoff's again and won't know who Lovie Smith is. (No, that's NOT gonna happen!)

I wholeheartily agree! I want that man out of town more than you can imagine. I knew he was a bad signing when they signed him (I was accused of being racist of course) and he's done a terrible job and though one of his teams did go to the Superbowl, that was done in spite of his efforts, not because.

I hope and pray that not only he, but a majority of the front office is let go, his entire coaching staff with the possible exception of Toub, and the team is revamped. If the Colts can land someone like Grigson and Pagano, so can they if the McCaskey's stay out of the process.

Can you tell I'm angry?

I must be getting Senile. I just looked it up and you’re right, the last time the Bears were in the Super Bowl it was the Indianapolis Colts that defeated them. I don’t know why I thought it was the Patriots.

Nevermind!

Lovie Smith is no Mike Ditka. Not even close.

I'm so sure that I would credit Mike Ditka with that year's success as much as that.

He had Buddy Ryan to create the toughest defense anyone saw that year, and the death of George Halas brought a change in General Manager. The Bears brought in a genius named Jim Finks who helped build the incredible Vikings teams. Finks helped to draft an all pro offensive line and some of the great defensive talent that won them the title.

Considering he came to the Bears from the Superbowl Champion St. Louis Rams and was a heck of a Defensive Coach there, I had some hopes for him.

Geez, just look at his record the last 4 years against the Packers ... < .500 That just ain't acceptable!

The Bears were a joke before Ditka and have been a joke since Ditka has been gone.

The only thing I've liked about the Bears is the Defense. Their take-aways have been awesome all year. Notice how whenever they get a turn-over the Defense actually shifts into "Offensive" mode and actually tries scoring? They've been incredible.

Peanut Tillman should be MVP, but he won't be.

And granted Urlacher's "screw the fans" comment a few weeks ago was over the top, but he's played really well this year until he got hurt.

Sure he's slowed down a step but he's played really smart this year and that's enabled the Defense to do very well also. (Just my opinion there...)

If they fire him, the Bears need to have their heads examined. I’m not a Bears fan, at all, and was glad the Vikings won to knock them out of the playoffs (although I think the Bears would have had a better chance against Green Bay next month), but it’s crazed lunacy to get rid of the best head coach the Bears have had in 40 years, and that includes Ditka (who obviously was more colorful, and more fun to watch because he tended to explode, but clearly not a great coach; he merely had one immensely talented team that was only immensely talented for one unforgettable year).

But wait a second — no, I agree, FIRE LOVIE SMITH!!!

Thanks usconservative.

Jim Finks was hired by the Bears in 1974. He resigned in ‘82 or ‘83 because Halas didn’t consult him in the hiring of Ditka. He had plenty of time to try to build a winner but did not succeed. His hiring of Neil Armstrong as Head Coach was a poor choice, which led to Halas taking control in the hiring of Ditka in 1982.

Once Ditka took over you could see the whole attitude of the organization change and they began acting like they expected to win instead of being the perrenial losers they had been since 1963 when they won the Championship and Ditka was Rookie of The Year.

> Maybe the problem is the Bears themselves, not the Head Coach.

Part of the problem is, the Black ‘n’ Blue is a tough division. The Bears were in it all the way through today’s game, and needed just a bit of help (a Vikings loss) to head to the playoffs. The Vikings came from a long way back, after they’d been written off, and just barely handled the Packers, who (although I do hate ‘em) are one of the best in the NFL year after year for the past, oh, twenty or so. And the Packers weren’t able to beat them today.

And remember, even the Lions’ losing season was, on average, something like four-five points a game, including today’s 2 point loss; averaging the losses only, it’s higher, but there was one game that was a bit of a blowout.

About the only thing that can be said about changing coaches in a team that is, overall, a winning team that hasn’t closed the whole deal is, maybe it’ll add the one missing piece they need. But often it’s more likely to shift emphasis into one area and have something (or more than one) that was solid fall apart.

That was an amazing run. I think Tarkenton went to four, not consecutive, and lost them all.

He’ll get a job offer, immediately, if the Bears cut him loose. They’d have to have someone on the horizon (like another recently fired coach) who would both fit into their overall scheme and bring something new that they need. Or, they could head off into a disaster again, which is much more likely. With Aaron Rogers as a QB in the division, recruiting a supposedly championship-level QB could be challenging. But it may not be necessary.

The “perfect season” 1972 Dolphins had their star QB go down in game five, and Muskegon, MI native Earl Morrall stepped in and led them through the rest of the season, and into the playoffs, to be replaced by Griese and generally forgotten. Griese wound up in the Hall of Fame. :’)

Bill Belichick worked for the (Baltimore) Colts, Lions, Broncos, and Giants before winding up with the Browns. He had one winning season there, Modell fired him after moving the team to Baltimore, and wound up an ass’t with the Patriots, then the Jets, then back to the Patriots, replacing Pete Carroll, who himself wound up a success at USC, then back to the Seahawks, where he had a lot of work to do, and got a slow start, and in 2010 coached them to a losing record that was, oddly, good enough to win their division outright. They beat the Saints, and lost to (ta-dah!) duh Bears, who then lost to the Packers. Imagine, the Browns fired Belichick. Carroll’s USC Trojans wound up under a cloud because of NCAA violations, and Belichick has been caught basically cheating and/or doing underhanded things a few times.
