My dad (he was born in 1919) told me that FDR used to ride in his car through the unpaved streets in the neighborhood where he lived as a kid, and he would toss hard candies to all the little barefooted urchins. That was 10th St. in SE DC, the block of rowhouses was torn down ages ago and it’s now covered by 695’s pavement. I suppose it was even a rough neighborhood back in the early 1930s. But people knifed each other back then; not too much gunplay among the young. 😮

On the up side, the more adamantly blue city mayors refuse to crack down on violent crime and criminals, the more stark will be the contrast with DC and other cities that emulate Trump’s crackdown and untie their own officers’ hands.
