Mine was supposed to use an attic fan to vent. The previous owner took that out too.
A large Quonset hut with windows and a large metal canopy works for me.
“A large Quonset hut”
That’s where I lived immediately after I was born.
They are safer then most places they can be dolled up with fire proof facades.
It was the parsonage of a very small, very poor church.
The attic fan should be blowing air out of the attic so having it run would actually blow the embers away from your attic.
I had the attic (roof) fan added but never closed the vents.
Where I live, in addition to those things you mentioned, vents help prevent black mold in attics.
sealed with spray-on foam....
That stuff is a nightmare if you have to replace the roof.
Home Inspectors told me that.
“sealed with spray-on foam...That stuff is a nightmare if you have to replace the roof.”
Damn, didn’t think of that. It was like the inside of an igloo up there...spooky.
See, I knew all along it wasn’t the fault of that jackass governor, or that lamebrain skank running the fire service! It was those dang vented attics.

First thought that entered my mind when I read the headline!
YMMV but my position is the least amount of roof penetrations the better. Over time, roof turbines will cause failure of the roof deck. Been there, done that.
And OPEN THE DARN SPIGOT, Newscum! Those massive “half pipes” lined with homeless people need to be filled with water flowing from the north!
This was more of an urban fire than a wildfire. The wildfire started it, but the urban fire carried it and did the most damage. Wildfires have been more common only recently as a result of policy, having nothing to do with construction methods and materials.
Please don't try to snow me. I'm likely the only FReeper with a California Prescribed Fire Plan currently on file. I've also built housing, designed and built wildland firefighting equipment, obtained environmental permits for industrial processes, etc. OK?
“Snow you”
WTH are you talking about? The Fine Homebuilding article was an excellent piece of work with sound advice about building a fire-resistant home in fire-prone areas whether wildfire or urban fire. There was an article a few days ago showing a home that survived in the PP area that used the same construction details. Homes on both sides were reduced to ashes. I posted it as a way to inform others about how to design for wildfire areas.
Lighten up! I’m glad you have such great experience, have such good credentials and are smart as a whip. But what set you off?
